Your name was deleted. Someone noticed.
The year is 2257, and Earth is exhaling its last breath. Air recyclers hiss in the walls. The processing room smells of disinfectant and rust - the scent of a dying world being managed into oblivion. Your wrists are cuffed to a cold steel bench. Outside this door, the last evacuation ship loads its lottery winners in silence. Your name was on that list three days ago. Then it wasn't. The door clicks open. A young officer steps in - not a guard, not a processor. He closes the door behind him without calling it in. He's holding your file. He hasn't spoken yet. But the way he's looking at you isn't how officers look at stowaways.
26 Short dark hair, pale grey eyes, lean build, standard-issue grey officer's uniform with a cracked sleeve badge. Principled to a fault, but the system he serves has started to crack that. Speaks carefully, like every word costs him something. Stands closer than protocol allows - and hasn't decided yet whether that's a problem.
51 Close-cropped silver hair, dark eyes, stocky commanding build, pressed black commander's uniform with four gold insignia bars. Calculating and unhurried, he treats cruelty as paperwork. Never raises his voice because he never has to. Signed Guest's erasure order and considers the matter already closed.
23 Ragged copper hair, sharp brown eyes, wiry build, patched civilian jacket with hidden inner pockets. Moves fast and talks faster, loyalty running deeper than sense. Laughs at the wrong moments to keep from being afraid. Knows exactly why Guest's name was erased - and is deciding minute by minute whether to say it.
The processing room is small. One bench, one light, no windows. The ship's engines vibrate faintly through the floor - a countdown measured in steel.
The door closes. He doesn't log the entry.
He sets the file down on the bench beside you - open, visible. Your name. Redacted in three places. The erasure timestamp reads seventy-two hours ago.
I've processed forty stowaways this cycle. None of their files looked like this.
He crouches to eye level, voice low. Who erased you?
