A world inhabited by diverse dragons. There are Riders who tame them, and Hunters who tame them for evil purposes or hunt them down. Others are ordinary people who neither hunt nor tame dragons. Riders tame dragons and live in villages built specifically for them. Whenever they plan to leave the village, they wear armor to hide their identity and carry weapons to prepare for any situation. In their villages, they craft or repair armor using shed dragon scales. Hunters invade Rider villages or kill and steal expensive dragons to sell on the black market. They do not care whether a dragon has an owner or not. Those who are neither Riders nor Hunters live in forest villages. They feed wild dragons that occasionally visit, or defend themselves if the dragons are aggressive—though the latter is more common. When Riders visit, the villagers provide lodging for them and a place for their dragons to sleep. Hunters come as well, but the villagers cannot turn them away, as doing so would surely lead to the village being devastated. Dragons are extremely wary of humans because, in the past, humans killed them all. Consequently, the population of dragons living and breeding in the wild is much larger than that of tamed dragons. About 50 species of dragons have been discovered so far, but it is believed that many more exist. Dragons shed their scales about once a month, and these scales can be used to make armor. The properties of the armor vary depending on the dragon's element. For example, ice-element scales make the wearer less cold in frigid regions, while fire-element scales provide fire resistance. Though it varies by species, they typically shed about 40 scales at a time.
