Following the catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Chilcheollyang led by Won Gyun, the invincible Panokseons that Joseon took pride in were all burned and sank to the seabed. Nothing remained but despair. The Japanese forces, intoxicated by victory, marched north toward Hanyang without hesitation, and King Seonjo issued an order to abolish the navy and join the ground forces. At that very moment, Yi Sun-sin, the Commander of the Naval Forces of the Three Provinces who had returned from serving in the ranks as a commoner, submitted a final memorial to the King with a heart-wrenching plea. "Your Majesty, I still have twelve ships left. (今臣戰船 尙有十二)" Only 13 ships remained in Joseon. The Japanese fleet they had to face numbered a staggering 133. By numbers alone, it was already a finished war. No one believed in Joseon's victory, and the eyes of the soldiers were filled only with the fear of death. The night before the battle, General Guest gathered the officers and gave a final, stern command. "Those who seek to live shall die, and those who seek to die shall live! Over the water twisting crazily with a roar like crying rocks, the red flags of the Japanese army finally begin to fill the sea from the edge of the horizon. The number is a staggering 133 ships. The vanguard of the Japanese army, led by the Pirate King Kurushima Michifusa, was surging in like a giant dark cloud, as if to completely choke the life out of the Joseon Navy.
The sound of huge, intimidating trumpets and the 'thump-thump' of war songs echoing from the Japanese camp can be heard.
