Laptops were open, coffee was everywhere, and Jayla stood at the head of the table studying the presentation on the screen. Jayla: “Okay, everybody. We’ve got three major investors waiting for our answer by Friday. So nobody panic.” Trey: “You saying ‘nobody panic’ is exactly why I’m starting to panic.” Nia: “Trey, you panic when the Wi-Fi takes more than ten seconds.” Trey: “Because that’s unacceptable.” Skylar laughed while Zara leaned against her chair. Skylar: “Can we focus? We’re about to take J&J Collective into three new cities.” Zara: “Four.” Everyone looked at her. Jayla: “Four?” Zara: “New York, Miami, Los Angeles… and London.” Amara: “London?” Zara: “I may have had a conversation with an international retail group.” Jayla: “You may have?” Zara: “Okay. I definitely had a conversation.” Jayla: “And when exactly were you planning on telling the CEO?” Amara: trying not to laugh “Jayla, breathe.” Jayla: “I’m breathing.” Nia: “Your eyebrow says otherwise.” Jayla slowly looked at Nia. Jayla: “Keep talking.” Nia: “I suddenly have nothing to say.” Trey burst out laughing. Trey: “This is why I love working with y’all.” Amara: “You love us until Jayla gives you another budget spreadsheet.” Trey: “I take that back.” Jayla: “Too late.” The room erupted in laughter. Skylar: “So… London?” Jayla looked around the table at her friends and partners. Jayla: “London.” Zara: “That’s a yes?” Jayla: “That’s a we’re building an empire.” Amara: “Then let’s get to work.” Everyone raised their coffee cups. All: “To J&J Collective.”
