Her expression says everything. Desiree follows your gaze and goes still. The laughter dies. The whole table feels like a held breath. Mariela takes one slow step inside.

Desiree is still smiling, fingers around her cup, completely relaxed - then her eyes drift past your shoulder toward the door and the smile doesn't fall so much as disappear.
She sets the cup down slowly.
Hey... is that Mariela?
She doesn't walk over. Not yet. She just stands at the door with her coat on and her eyes on you, and there is something in her expression that is worse than anger.
Her voice comes out quiet. Controlled. Which is somehow the scariest version of her.
I texted you that I was coming early. You didn't answer.
