One day, people with powers beyond human common sense appeared in modern society.
People who create flames, dominate water, and shake the earth.
People began to call them the Awakened.
There was confusion at first. But as time passed, the Awakened were gradually accepted as part of society, and the power they possessed was established as a system.
The ranks indicating the strength of an Awakened consist of five levels.
Rank D, Rank C, Rank B, Rank A, and Rank S.
The higher the rank, the stronger the power generally is.
However, in this world, a high rank does not necessarily mean victory.
This is because affinities exist between abilities.
🔥 Pyro-type
Abilities that handle flames and heat.
A lineage with powerful firepower and destructive force, strong against Terra-types but weak against Aqua-types.
🌊 Aqua-type
Abilities that freely handle water and currents.
They can change form and flow to be used in various ways, strong against Pyro-types but weak against Terra-types.
⛰️ Terra-type
Abilities that handle substances constituting the earth, such as soil, rocks, and minerals.
They boast powerful defense and overwhelming mass, strong against Aqua-types but weak against Pyro-types.
The relationship between the three lineages forms a cycle.
🔥 Pyro-type → ⛰️ Terra-type → 🌊 Aqua-type → 🔥 Pyro-type
And this affinity is not just a simple advantage or disadvantage.
It is powerful enough to overturn a difference of about one rank.
For example, if an A-Rank Pyro-type and a B-Rank Aqua-type face off, victory for the Pyro-type cannot be guaranteed simply because they are A-Rank.
So, in the Awakened society, an Awakened who has an affinity advantage over a specific opponent is called a Counter.
Counter is not a separate rank or profession.
It is a relationship determined by who you are facing.
And in the field, unofficial nicknames for each counter also exist.
🌊 Quencher An Aqua-type counter that puts out the flames of a Pyro-type.
⛰️ Wave Breaker A Terra-type counter that breaks the flow of an Aqua-type.
🔥 Terra Melter A Pyro-type counter that melts the defense of a Terra-type.
Therefore, just because a dangerous Awakened has appeared, sending a higher-ranked Awakened is not always the answer.
Sometimes, this command falls first in the field:
"Bring in a Counter!"
This law is no exception even for the top-tier S-Rank.
For S-Rank Pyro-type Yoon Seah, S-Rank Aqua-type Jin Seryeong becomes a Quencher; For Jin Seryeong, S-Rank Terra-type Choi Jaehyun becomes a Wave Breaker; For Choi Jaehyun, Yoon Seah becomes a Terra Melter again.
Even the three S-Ranks keep each other in check.
Of course, being a counter does not mean you will definitely win.
Results vary depending on an overwhelming gap of two or more ranks, skill level and output of the ability, experience, and situation.
Affinity is not a law that guarantees victory.
It is a law of balance that creates weaknesses even for the strong.
⚡ And, the Electro-type
However, a special power exists that deviates from this cycle.
The Electro-type.
The Electro-type has an affinity advantage over Pyro, Aqua, and Terra types alike.
In other words, a single Electro-type Awakened can be a counter against all three general lineages.
The most powerful affinity discovered to date.
It is also just as rare.
Only a tiny minority among the Awakened awaken as Electro-types, and it is not uncommon to never meet another Electro-type in one's lifetime.
However, the Electro-type also follows the same ranking system from D to S.
Being an Electro-type does not make one an absolute powerhouse by default.
And powers yet to be discovered.
As research on abilities continues, the possibility of two more lineages has been theoretically suggested.
Radiant-type. And Umbral-type.
However, there has not been a single case where an Awakened of these two lineages was actually discovered until now.
What kind of power they have.
Which lineages they are strong against, and which they are weak against.
Whether they are stronger than the Electro-type, or much weaker.
No one knows yet.
And now that the Awakened have become part of society.
Among numerous organizations, three guilds possess the strongest influence.
Arbiter, which receives state support and maintains order and responsibility.
Unchained, an illegal guild that pays back grudges the law could not resolve and pursues revenge and desire.
Meridian, a private guild that prioritizes contracts and profit over good and evil.
Different powers. Different affinities. Different values.
Someone maintains order, Someone abandons the law, Someone trades everything.
And there is also a path that belongs to neither side.
On that balance, the era of the Awakened continues.
