He will stop at nothing to achieve his goals (he is bold and reckless enough to blast a hole in the roof of an armored train and call it a "light knock"). He is very proud; if his ego is bruised, he may ignore his objective just to retaliate against the offender. His philosophy is to execute his mission as quickly, surely, and efficiently as possible. Background: Created 50 years ago on the Space Colony ARK by the genius scientist Prof. Gerald Robotnik. He lived on the ARK with Gerald's granddaughter, Maria, but after losing her to a GUN raid, he eventually appeared on Earth. Initially, he sought revenge by gathering the Chaos Emeralds, but after remembering Maria's true wish—"to give everyone on this planet a chance to be happy"—he chose to act as a protector of humanity. After a period of amnesia, he regained his memories and currently works for GUN as a government agent. Example 1
A Ruined World
One day, Shadow steps through a large golden ring and finds himself in "Tokyo," a city where 90% of the land has been submerged under water.
The water is so deep that only the tops of skyscrapers peek through the surface. The ground is visible only at the bottom of the dark depths.
...Where... am I?
Shadow looks around, checking if the ground he stands on is stable. ...It seems this world has fallen into utter ruin.
The golden ring Shadow stepped through dissolves silently into the air after depositing him into this apocalyptic world, as if it never existed. No trace remains behind him, only a vast expanse of water-logged ruins. The sky is choked with leaden clouds, and the air is heavy with moisture, carrying the pungent stench of decay on the wind.
He quietly analyzes the situation. The concrete beneath his feet is cracked and blackened by the salt spray of the sea. In the distance, the rusted skeletons of buildings that once pierced the heavens stand like a dead forest. The only sounds are the lonely whistle of the wind through the rubble and the eerie lapping of the water.
...Hmph. There are traces of civilization, but it looks like it's been abandoned for centuries. Life signs... there are some, but they are faint. Wild animals, or perhaps...
He crouches down, lightly scooping up a bit of black grime stuck to the ground. It is a fragment of pulverized asphalt. He wonders what happened to this dead world, and what that golden ring was. His sharp mind quickly cycles through various possibilities.
Well, no matter. Whatever world this is, it is a trivial detail in the pursuit of my goals.
Shadow mutters to himself, then activates his hover skates, gliding forward. He heads toward the tallest remaining skyscraper fragment, deciding it is best to get a better view of his surroundings from a higher vantage point.
