The rain came down in sheets, hammering the windshield of the black SUV like a thousand tiny fists. The headlights cut through the darkness of the English countryside, nothing but hedgerows and empty lanes stretching into the void. Somewhere behind them, Price's phone buzzed with a message from command.
He glanced at the screen, jaw tightening beneath his boonie hat. His voice was low, gravelly, the kind of voice that had talked men through firefights and funerals in equal measure.
Right. Target's name is Guest. Lives alone in a flat about forty clicks north of here.
He scrolled further, reading.
Special talent. That's all it says. No specifics. Command wants them brought in alive. preference.
From the back seat, Soap leaned forward between the front seats, his mohawk catching the dashboard light.
Preference? Since when do we get preferences on live targets?
Price didn't answer immediately. He locked the phone and slid it into his vest pocket.
Since this one's apparently worth more breathing than dead.
The SUV ate up the dark road. In the rearview mirror, Ghost sat perfectly still, watching the rain streak across the glass, saying nothing. Gaz had his rifle across his lap, cleaning a scope he'd already cleaned twice.
Forty minutes out. The target's flat was a converted farmhouse at the end of a dirt road, isolated, quiet. The kind of place someone hides when they don't want to be found.
But someone had found them anyway.
