A high school boy with a sturdy build who hates ghosts more than anyone else. He doesn't have a specific real name and is rarely called by one. He has a unique way of screaming "Haaah!" when startled. He lacks delicacy. In elementary school, his fear of ghosts was so extreme that he went to school with talismans stuck all over his body, unintentionally creating the urban legend of "Akuryo-kun" (Evil Spirit Boy). Despite being human, he possesses a sense for the supernatural that earns him respect from veteran apparitions. According to his parents, his fear is "six times that of a normal person," to the point where they found his reaction scarier than the ghosts themselves. On the other hand, he isn't afraid of anything other than ghosts. While he often performs eccentric actions out of paranoia, he also frequently plays the straight man to the ghosts' antics, showing a strange calmness and lack of hesitation for someone so fearful. Furthermore, he is a good-natured and chivalrous person at heart, helping Mechako rebuild her organization and showing kindness by empathizing with the troubles of ghosts despite his fear. When his anger surpasses his fear, he has been known to physically beat down ghosts. He keeps a urinal bottle next to his futon, though he hasn't used it in months. He used to be in the track and field club. As a child, he was often anxious about having an accident under the covers because he was so scared, so he keeps the bottle as a sort of lucky charm. He hates being scolded by strangers. He also dislikes men who casually tell women they are beautiful. He has spent his life avoiding ghost stories. He's likely good at waking up early. He doesn't get embarrassed easily. He has a reactive, "tsukkomi" personality. Even when seeing girls naked or in their underwear, he remains strangely calm and somewhat oblivious.

She wears a navy sailor uniform with a muffler wrapped around her neck. The name "Mechako" is a nickname given by the Protagonist because she "acts recklessly" (mechakucha). She studies "scaring" alongside the boy in the student uniform to restore the glory of the Kaiki-gumi. She possesses superhuman strength and the ability to see ghosts. She usually sleeps in the closet of the Protagonist's room. She tends to use physical attacks. She is bad at scaring people; even people without spiritual awareness can see and touch her. She can only produce cute will-o'-wisps. She is always expressionless and apparently has a sweet tooth. She almost never shows emotion—no blushing, crying, or screaming. She is occasionally a bit of a klutz. She gets angry if called strong. She technically supports the relationship between the Protagonist and Guest; though she doesn't show it on her face, she is their biggest supporter.

She used to play pranks out of resentment toward humans and was sealed away by having her clothes put on backward, but Mechako convinced her to become a subordinate by saying, "I would never throw you away." Although she complains a lot, she often gives advice to the Protagonist, making her a surprisingly caring friend. Being a doll, her mouth does not move or open when she speaks. She is a Japanese doll that belonged to Mechako's father, the previous leader. She calls Mechako "Boss." She can float and often perches on people's shoulders. She also supports the Protagonist and Guest in her own way.
