About

Long ago, mankind forsook the gods. Greed, murder, war, corruption, and cruelty consumed humanity until the gods regretted their creation. As punishment, they raised the island of Malthera and filled it with demons, monsters, giants, and abominations before unleashing them upon mankind. Civilization nearly collapsed. Only Seven Nations remained when Aldren, a righteous warrior devoted to the gods, united humanity against the creatures. Even together they were losing. Aldren begged the gods for mercy, promising mankind had learned from its wickedness. The gods agreed, but demanded a covenant. Every year, each of the Seven Nations must send its most promising male and female warrior, ages 13–17, to Malthera. These 14 Chosen must survive there for one year until the next group arrives. No rescue is allowed. If even one nation refuses, the covenant ends and Malthera’s creatures will be unleashed to exterminate humanity. For 200 years mankind has obeyed. The gods are faithfully worshiped and the old wicked ways condemned. Thousands of Chosen have entered Malthera, yet almost none return. Those few who survived came home physically and mentally broken, refusing to reveal what happened there. Now a new group has been chosen. Among them is Orion, a 16-year-old commoner, warrior, hunter, and devoted follower of the gods. He and thirteen strangers from rival nations must leave everything behind and enter Malt Hera together. Some consider being Chosen an honor. Others consider it a death sentence. They have one year to survive an island filled with monsters, mysteries, ancient secrets, and horrors mankind has feared for centuries. Their ship has reached Malthera.

Intro

The first thing anyone noticed about Malthera was the silence. Fourteen Chosen stood aboard the ship as it drifted toward a shore none wished to reach. The sea had grown strangely calm. No gulls cried overhead. No fish disturbed the black water. Even the wind seemed to die as the island emerged through the fog. Malthera. Jagged mountains vanished into dark clouds. An enormous forest covered the coast, its ancient trees packed so tightly that beyond the first rows there was only darkness. Ruined structures could barely be seen among the cliffs. Nothing moved. Yet everyone felt watched. Orion stood near the bow, staring silently. His usual lighthearted expression was gone. So this is it. Somewhere behind him were his mother, siblings, and home. He touched his sacred symbol and whispered a prayer. Elara stood nearby, back straight and chin raised. The princess refused to show fear, though her fingers tightened around the railing. Her eyes briefly found Orion before moving across the other Chosen. These were the people she might have to trust with her life. Draven almost looked amused. His massive arms remained crossed as he studied the others instead of the island. Most won’t last a month. There was no sadness in the thought. Marek stayed away from the railing. Average height. Average build. Forgettable. Exactly as he preferred. While everyone watched Malthera, Marek watched them. Who was afraid? Who was strong? Who would protect others? Who could be manipulated? Serena caught someone’s nervous gaze and offered a reassuring smile. “It’s going to be okay.” She sounded like she believed it. She didn’t. Her warm eyes quietly moved between the others, already learning them. Silas stood alone near the stern. He had barely spoken the entire voyage. His sharp eyes moved from the forest, to the cliffs, to the shore. No birds. No animals. No movement. Wrong. Everything about this place was wrong. Valeria stood tall, studying every face. Some hid their fear better than others. Fourteen arrived. Fourteen can leave. She had already made that promise to herself. Kaia leaned over the railing, green eyes fixed upon the wilderness. Fear was there—but so was fascination. An unexplored island of forests, mountains, rivers and ruins… Then she noticed something. The trees nearest the shore were covered in long scratches. Her curiosity vanished. THUD. The ship struck sand. Everyone froze. A wooden ramp slowly lowered onto the black beach. Beyond it waited the forest. The captain would go no farther. Their supplies were unloaded without ceremony, and not one sailor stepped onto the sand. Fourteen strangers looked at Malthera. Then at one another. Royalty and commoners. Warriors and hunters. The honorable and selfish. The brave and terrified. For the next year, these faces would be their entire world. Some would become friends. Some rivals. Perhaps lovers. Perhaps enemies. And judging by the thousands who came before them… some would become corpses. From somewhere deep within the forest came a long, unnatural howl. The sailors immediately began pulling away. The fourteen Chosen were alone. Their year on Malthera had begun.
