Give it a try. I'll be right here.
Life flowed by busily until, finally, the day of resignation arrived.
On the way home on the bus after clearing out the desk I'd occupied for years,
A thought suddenly crossed my mind.
'The employee ID I used to wear will soon be around someone else's neck, and the chair I sat in every day will be touched by my successor's clothes.'
'Is life just about people constantly swapping places with each other?'
Lost in thought, I passed my stop and ended up at the final station.
Walking toward my studio apartment with a heavy bag, my phone buzzed once.
[This is the last month of your contract~]
[Market prices have gone up a lot lately, so I'll probably be raising the deposit for the next contract. Take your time to think about it~ ^^]
As I put the phone in my pocket, a long trail of white breath escaped into the air.
Too tired to even cook, I bought a lunch box at the convenience store.
Entering the apartment, the darkness seemed deeper thanks to the broken motion-sensor light in the entryway.
I tossed my bags in front of the bed, heated the lunch box in the microwave, and ate as usual.
After finishing the hamburger steak, I chewed on a piece of lettuce soaked in sauce.
"I wonder when this lettuce was picked?"
...
"Wouldn't it be okay to live impulsively just once in my life?"
I picked up my phone and called my dad.
"Dad, does Grandma's house still have electricity?"
"....Farming? I'll figure it out as I go, I guess."

I dragged my moderately packed suitcase down here after getting the key to Grandma's house from my dad. Feeling the cold air brush against my face, I opened the familiar gate with a metallic clatter.
Upon entering the yard, the first thing that caught my eye was the thick layer of dust settled on the wooden porch. Fortunately, it hadn't snowed, but the house, untouched by human hands for two months, looked somewhat foreign.
I put on my work gloves and mask and opened the front door. Stepping inside, I found the furniture and household items Grandma used to use still in place. After looking around the house for a moment, I picked up a broom and dustpan leaning in the corner and began sweeping away the visible dust.
"At least it hasn't piled up too much."
I was relieved that the dust didn't kick up enough to make me cough. After giving the floor a rough sweep, two rags rolling around near the sink caught my eye. I took them outside, washed them clean at the outdoor faucet, and came back inside to wipe down the wooden floor.
"My hands are so cold...!"
Wiping the floor while crouching was more grueling than I expected. After repeatedly bending and straightening my body, my back began to ache slightly.
Fortunately, the house wasn't that large, so I could finish the cleaning by around noon after starting in the morning. The house, which had been empty for a while, finally looked a bit like a place where someone lived. I sprawled out on the clean floor with my exhausted body. The cold floor cooled down my heated skin. As I lay there blankly for a long time, the sound of my stomach growling echoed through the quiet house.
"...I wonder if the garden crops are still alive?"
Hunger won over fatigue. I pulled myself up, stepped down from the porch, and headed toward the garden by the stone wall, hand hoe in hand.
Under the blazing sun, he saw Guest's movements slowing down. He put down his hoe and handed his water bottle to Guest.
Take a break if it's hard.
I took the water, but I didn't stop hoeing.
I'll just do a little more of this and then rest.
He looked at the field for a moment at Guest's words.
It's not like the field is going to run away.
Without saying more, he stood there until Guest finished drinking the water.
The puppy, who had been playing nearby, approached Guest's side, seemingly exhausted by the heat. It sat pressed against Guest's feet, wagging its tail gently.
Stroking the puppy that approached, I looked up at Yoon Taejun standing next to me.
...Do you usually take breaks like this while working?
