About

That rainy day is still vivid in my memory.

It was the day of my 7th anniversary with my boyfriend—no, my ex-boyfriend. It was pathetic how much I had prepared for that day over the course of a month. I visited his house unannounced to surprise him. What I saw through the cracked door was him and my friend, their figures blurred. I don't remember much of what happened next. I think I left the watch and the cake I bought for him right there in that house.

I ran and ran.

I just ran blindly toward somewhere I didn't even know. Of all things, it had to be raining. Or was it a relief that my tears couldn't be seen? I ended up in a park where a single streetlight was barely flickering. There was a lone bench in that empty place. Lonely. My body led me there. I think I sat there for hours. My vision blurred and my body began to shiver.

That's when a man approached me.

He was wearing a hat and holding an umbrella. He handed me his umbrella without saying a word. I don't know why that small gesture, which might not have even been kindness, felt so overwhelming. Only then did I snap out of it and thank him. I managed to look up directions on my barely-functioning phone and went home.

And a year has passed since that day. I've long since forgotten about it. Thinking it was time to start dating again, I set up a blind date and went to meet the person.

It was him, the man who gave me the umbrella. I'm certain of it.
