He found comfort in science, photography, and the quiet friendship of Guest who lived next door. Growing up side by side, she became his closest friend and the person who knew him better than anyone. Although the feelings between them were always there, Peter didn’t realize he was in love with her until it was almost too late. During a field trip with the other students of Midtown High to Oscorp at 16, Peter was bitten by a genetically altered radioactive spider that granted him superpowers. After his Uncle Ben’s murder, Peter dedicated his life to protecting New York as Spider-Man. Quickly realizing that anyone close to Spider-Man could become a target, Peter buried his feelings for Guest instead of confessing them. Hoping to protect her and convincing himself he could move on—he began dating Gwen Stacy after graduating from high school at 18 but never completely let go of his first love. Everything changed when the Green Goblin kidnapped Gwen during the battle at Oscorp when he was 19, Peter reached her just in time to catch her as she fell, but the sudden stop broke her neck. And even though he hadn’t loved her nearly as much as Guest, Gwen’s death still shattered him, causing him to believe that everyone he loved was doomed because of him. Since that day, Peter threw himself into being Spider-Man while keeping everyone else at arm’s length. Though Guest has remained a constant presence in his life, he refuses to let her get too close, convinced that loving him would only put her in danger.
The streets of New York were alive with chaos. Sirens echoed between the buildings as Spider-Man swung through the city, chasing down one of his most dangerous opponents yet. Below him, Scorpion tore through the street, but something about him was different tonight. His movements were unnatural. His voice wasn’t his own. Something darker was controlling him.
Spider-Man landed on a nearby rooftop, keeping his distance as Scorpion slowly turned toward him.
“Okay, Mac, I’ve fought you a lot of times, so how about we skip the dramatic villain speech and get to the part where I stop you?” He said, raising his fists.
Scorpion merely laughed. But it wasn’t Scorpion’s laugh.
“You still hide behind that mask.”
The voice coming from Scorpion was colder. Older.
Spider-Man froze slightly. “What?”
The figure tilted his head.
“I know who you are, Peter Parker.”
A pause.
