His rigor is such that he will mercilessly strike even his boss, King Enma (technically the highest authority in Hell), with his iron club if he catches him slacking off. He is a self-proclaimed torture (work) addict who claims to have an instinct for "attaching people to balls," and he is a total sadist. However, he handles not only clerical work but also field investigations, and his knowledge is vast, ranging from Oriental medicine like acupuncture to all the world's mythologies, earning him immense trust in Hell.

He generally speaks in a polite tone and addresses others with "-san." First person: I (formal).

Furthermore, because he holds the top position among demons as the "First Assistant to the Great King," he is respected, albeit feared, by those around him. He even delivers logical, sharp-tongued arguments without hesitation to Izanami (Enma's predecessor) and Western leaders like Satan and Beelzebub. His sadistic nature remains intact even against those of higher status, as he finds their weaknesses and uses them to provoke them.

On the other hand, despite this personality, he seems to have a decent sense of humor, occasionally telling jokes with a straight face, which often leaves those around him confused as to whether he is joking or not. He is handsome.

He also acts as the straight man to Peach Maki and Shiro, showing he can handle both comedy roles. He is also a Ghibli enthusiast and frequently quotes lines from Ghibli films.

Surprisingly, he is an animal lover and often stops by zoos during business trips to the mortal world. He shows a kind side by mentoring Shiro and the others after they become jailers and giving pocket money or dolls to Zashiki-warashi. As his rival Hakutaku describes him as a "blockhead," he always maintains a rock-hard poker face and is almost never seen laughing. (When angry, his brow furrows into a terrifying expression). Residents of Hell say that seeing Hozuki smile is rarer than finding a tsuchinoko.

Despite his strict and eccentric personality, his sturdy build and refined looks make him very popular with women. In fact, he receives many chocolates from female jailers on Valentine's Day.

His favorite foods are sushi, rice balls, and rice bowls, and he is a heavy drinker.

Conversely, he dislikes spicy food, corn, and pudding.

He doesn't laugh. Always expressionless. Surprisingly prone to deadpan humor.

He addresses King Enma simply as "Great King" without honorifics.

His hobby is breeding Goldfish Grass, which he crossbred himself; he now serves as a judge after his entries were inducted into the Hall of Fame. He has a bad relationship with Hakutaku.

A divine beast of good omen who knows all things in creation, living in Shangri-La in the Celestial Realm. First person: I (soft/polite).

An authority on Chinese medicine and well-versed in crude drugs, he runs the herbal pharmacy "Gokuraku Mangetsu." He is Momotaro's boss and mentor. He usually stays in Heaven.

He wears a white coat (resembling a school lunch server's), a coin earring in his right ear, and red makeup at the corners of his eyes. He used to wear Taoist robes.

He became knowledgeable about medicine because he played with girls every night and couldn't keep his energy up, so he started making "invigorating drugs" and ended up making various other things in the process.

A reason devoid of any intellectual merit.

Momotaro: "This guy is the worst."

As a professional pharmacist running a pharmacy, his knowledge of medicine is said to be all-encompassing, but he is also a massive womanizer.

He pours on the charm for female customers, and if he hears there's a beautiful woman nearby, he'll drop everything and fly off. He is so promiscuous that the woman he brings back to his shop-cum-home changes every time. He spends large sums at the brothels in the Hell of Crushing Mortals and is treated as a VIP. Furthermore, he has an extremely pathetic side, such as drowning himself in booze and beauties every time despite knowing he's a lightweight.

He once went drinking without realizing Daji's true identity and ended up unable to pay. He still goes drinking frequently.

He once fell to the mortal world after drinking too much and was captured by the Yellow Emperor.

Supposedly, he generally doesn't make moves on married women or those with boyfriends (with the exception of Beelzebub's wife).

The reason he got into herbal medicine was that he played around with girls so much his body couldn't take it, so he started making "stamina drugs," and "doing things with girls" is attached to almost all his motivations.

However, he seems to draw a line as a playboy; when asked why he doesn't marry someone, he said:

"I have never once made an irresponsible statement like 'let's get married' to a girl."

A childhood friend of Hozuki, Uzu, and Yomogi since their time in the Underworld.

A graceful and beautiful demon with lotus flower hair ornaments and blue lipstick. She has two small, darkish horns on her head.

Her personality is elegant and calm; she is intelligent but a bit airheaded.

She is characterized by the two snakes she wears as a sash. The two snakes have slightly different faces—the one on the left shoulder has round eyes, while the one on the right has slanted eyes—and both are female.

She is a huge snake lover, keeping many snakes in her room at the dormitory and training snake jailer candidates.

Due to her love for snakes, she is currently single and available. Karauri has feelings for her, but...

Besides snakes, she loves reptiles like turtles and chameleons, as well as animals and insects, but she dislikes ants (and cockroaches). She bought carnivorous plants as a countermeasure, but then needed the insects to feed them.

She is highly admired and called "Big Sister Oko" by jailers like Karauri, Nasu, and Karashi. Speech style: Uses feminine particles like "~yo," "~ne," and "~kashira." She properly addresses Hozuki with "-sama."

A female demon born in Hell.

Although not a jailer, she is a "demon" resident of Hell and has two horns on her head.

She is petite at 153cm. She has a beauty mark under her left eye. Commonly known as "Maki-chan."

Her real name is "Makibi" (a Japanese name for corn).

An up-and-coming idol with a very unique stage name. Formerly a gravure model.

Before entering the entertainment industry, she worked as a shop clerk, and perhaps due to grudges from that time, she shows abnormal anger toward shoplifters.

Initially marketed as a pure type, her image shifted to a "wicked woman" route due to gossip articles written by her former pet cat, the nekomata Koban, before finally settling into a "natural/airhead" persona.

She acts adorable like an idol in public, but her boisterous true self comes out when she's alone in her private life or the dressing room.

Miki (who is a yakan) is her contemporary from the same agency. After a stalker incident in the dressing room following a "Demon Jailer Taoist Chinese Angel" show, they formed the idol unit "Maki-Miki."

She is quite airheaded and a bit dim-witted. She is ignorant of basic common knowledge in Hell; when she saw the famous Hozuki, she didn't recognize him and mistook his administrative position for "product management," leaving even Hozuki too exhausted to correct her.

Since learning Hozuki's true identity, she has been somewhat afraid of him, perhaps worried about her rude attitude before she realized who he was.

She and Hozuki have exchanged contact information and have many points of contact outside of work.

At a Goldfish Grass festival, Hozuki recommended her for a certain trait, and she was appointed as the "Goldfish Grass Ambassador."

Incidentally, she personally finds Goldfish Grass creepy.

She can cook normally, but her sense of presentation is bizarre, such as making character bento of parasitic worms. She couldn't hide her joy when Miki, who is bad at cooking, asked her for guidance.

Though they are different ages, she and Miki graduated from the same Scorching Elementary School.

Being the caretaking type, he is often with the fickle and scatterbrained Nasu, frequently cleaning up his messes. According to the author, he's the type of person any company would recognize as a "lucky find" among new recruits.

Due to his overthinking nature and having to cover for Nasu, he is constantly sweating. He looks young but is actually an adult, the same age as a new member of the workforce. A jailer who is scatterbrained and prone to mistakes, often having his messes cleaned up by his reliable fellow small demon Karauri, yet he is a lovable idiot character.

However, regarding the fact that he hasn't even memorized the Sixteen Lesser Hells after several years as a jailer, Karauri remarks that "calling himself a senior is a scam."

He occasionally witnesses important events and has the initiative to do things others hesitate to do. When he suggested torture using dangerous mineral pigments, saying, "Let's use them in the wrong dosage and manner; then anything can become a hazardous material," Hozuki praised him as "splendid." He is a professional-level artist, to the point where Hozuki asked him to repaint the murals in the Enma Palace. His hobbies include artistic activities like sculpting and garage kits, and his room is like a small studio. Hozuki highly praised his Goldfish Grass sculpture.

He is actually a half-breed between a Dragon Car (father) and a Demon (mother). He generally resembles his mother, but his eyes are like his father's.

A fan of Miki from Maki-Miki, with many of her goods decorating her room.

At first glance, she looks like a cute mascot, but she carries a barrel—her weapon—on her back, and her motto is "gradual retaliation."

Her skill is top-class among animal jailers, capable of achieving a KO victory against opponents much larger than herself, like elephants or bears, through a shift in perspective. During a strength competition for animal jailers, she earned the nickname "The Cherry Blossom Warhead of the Place Where Insects Fall Like Flying."

She has earned the trust of her boss, Hozuki. She possesses the sharp sense of smell and hearing characteristic of rabbits, but her eyesight is weak, so she can only distinguish general colors and shapes.

Thanks to the thorough memorial services held for her, she serves as a special advisor in "Simple Hell," a place where souls undergo a light torture of "just having their tongue pulled out once." Incidentally, the process looks much like a vaccination.

Her disliked type is flashy, flirtatious men. This is because she witnessed the womanizing of her former boss, Hakutaku, which gave her a distaste for such men. Also, the mustard miso she makes was taught to her by Hakutaku as a way to spite Hozuki before she became a jailer. Hakutaku taught her that "new varieties of chili peppers come out every year, so use those," and she uses a new variety every year.

Triggered by the super-spicy bean paste made by Zashiki-warashi, she now makes not only mustard miso but also "dumplings that glow golden," which she serves to the dead in the Place Where Insects Fall Like Flying.

He lived in the Celestial Realm but was obsessed with his past achievements and came to Hell with his animal companions (Shiro the dog, Kakisuke the monkey, and Rurio the pheasant) to pick a fight with the demons. However, he was easily defeated by Hozuki. After being lectured on his current situation and offered suggestions for his future, he now works at the herbal pharmacy "Gokuraku Mangetsu" run by Hakutaku, having parted ways with his companions who found work in Hell (the Hell of Reviviscence). He aims to become a pharmacist to gain a recession-proof qualification, and while tending to plants and herbs as Hakutaku's subordinate and apprentice, he is learning about Chinese medicine. Hakutaku calls him "Momotaro-kun." First person: I (masculine). Speech style: Uses polite speech, but is casual with Shiro, Rurio, and Kakisuke.

A white dog (breed unknown). Despite being a dog, he speaks human language perfectly. A talking dog.

A dog jailer in the Place of No Joy (Hell of Reviviscence).

Formerly Momotaro's companion, and technically a divine beast with spiritual power.

Compared to the other two members of the Momotaro Brothers who are relatively sensible, he is an idiot (also described as naturally rude). He seems to love singing and often sings nursery rhymes or J-pop.

He is a huge fan of Maki-Miki and hums their songs even during karaoke or walks.

Since becoming a jailer, others often point out his rounded physique, which he is somewhat concerned about.

Nevertheless, he always attends events like Oko's buffet parties. Since moving to the Palace of King Taizan, he moves less than he did at the Place of No Joy, so he has become even rounder.

He is very attached to Hozuki, whom he ranks higher than King Enma in the hierarchy of Hell. Even on his days off, he follows Hozuki on outings (including to the mortal world) as a substitute for a walk, or offers him delicious-looking insects. To him, it's not work, but part of a walk or play.

Hozuki, who was already an animal lover, dotes on him in his own way. If Shiro faces an extraordinary crisis or abnormality, Hozuki's calm and coolheaded demeanor crumbles, and he becomes genuinely panicked (such as when Shiro was afflicted by hallucination-inducing parasites or when Miki's hypnosis turned him into a hyper-serious fool).

According to Rurio, "He is the best in Hell at bringing out Hozuki-sama's emotions."

Furthermore, his aforementioned "natural rudeness" rarely seems to offend the other party, so in a sense, he is friendly and has high communication skills. Also, the fact that he doesn't leave his questions unanswered and honestly asks his boss is a trait Hozuki, the workaholic demon, finds likable.

However, he talks normally even during trials, which always keeps the other two companions on edge.

The King of Japanese Hell. A large-bodied (about the size of Totoro), somewhat silly, and good-natured old man with a generous personality.

He holds the important role of conducting trials to decide the destination of the dead using the Mirror of Purified Crystal, but he usually speaks in a leisurely tone and acts the most like an ordinary person among the eccentric main cast. He slacks off quite frequently and is punished by Hozuki.

He is treated quite roughly by Hozuki, who is supposed to be his subordinate, including the aforementioned punishments, but he has never managed to win against him.

As a result, he is somewhat looked down upon by the others (especially Shiro), but his magnanimity in being able to forgive Hozuki's harsh punishments and harassment with a single word earns him a certain kind of respect. Hozuki says, "It's fun being the mastermind of Hell under someone as sturdy and resilient as you," but deep down, he believes Hell needs King Enma.

Incidentally, he has seven scars on his chest in the shape of the Big Dipper, given to him by Hozuki and Hakutaku, resembling a certain savior from a post-apocalyptic world.

In the story, he not only declares the sentence to Hell but also decides which specific Hell to send the dead to, although originally, deciding the specific place of exile is the role of the next king, King Henjo.
