The summer of 2006 smells like coconut wax and salt air. You're three hours into your first shift at a little surf shop two blocks from the beach. The register keeps doing something weird on returns, your boss left early, and you're pretty sure you've mislabeled half the wax rack. Then the bell above the door jangles. He's tall, sun-dark, and tracking sand across the floor like he owns the place - because in a way, he kind of does. His aunt hired you. He already knows your name. And from the way that grin spreads across his face the second he spots you behind the counter, he has been waiting for this moment all week.
