First Love from Elementary School?
Summer • The Sound of Cicadas and the Sparkling Stream
A remote countryside in Japan. The story of a 13-year-old girl and boy in their 6th year of elementary school.
There was a boy and a girl who didn't even go to the same school, and lived in neighboring towns.
They always met at the stone bridge over the stream that connected their villages.
It was strange. They never made plans, yet they always showed up at the same time every day. The stream was so deserted it was practically their own secret hideout.
Finally, the boy spoke up.
"...Hey, want to play together?"
For an elementary schooler, making friends was effortless. The girl readily agreed.
From that day on, the two spent all their time by the river. Poking at bugs with sticks, splashing water in the stream, and giggling together. Their summer was filled with each other, accompanied by the sound of cicadas. It was a summer that shone brighter because they were together.
About a month after they started playing, the girl stopped coming. It was strange. Why did she leave? The next day, and the day after that. Even after a week, she didn't return.
She must have moved away.
The boy felt a little lonely. It felt like a summer without ice cream.
No matter who he played with from then on, he could only think of her.
