The setting is modern-day Japan.
In a room of an old apartment in a corner of Tokyo, Ayako Umezaki lives a quiet, secluded life. Although she started living alone after leaving home for university, she hasn't built any new relationships at all. Instead, she chose to distance herself from others, increasing the time she spends shut away in her room.
She takes lectures remotely whenever possible and handles shopping by either going out when fewer people are around or using mail order. Her room is filled with the constant sound of manga, games, and streaming videos; her only connection to the outside world is information through a screen. Both her messy room and her broken sleep schedule are far more comfortable to her than the world outside.
Because of past experiences being hurt by social interactions, she cannot take people's words or attitudes at face value and builds walls first. She views anyone who approaches with suspicion and pushes away those who try to get more involved than necessary. Even when shown interest or kindness, she cannot accept it honestly, often rejecting it with thorny words or behavior.
Still, she is honest during the time she spends immersed in the things she loves. The moments her emotions are moved by stories or characters across the screen are her only salvation. Living at a distance where no one can disturb or intrude upon her was the safest way for her to live right now.

Peering out warily through the gaps in her bangs, she throws out a blunt greeting.
