*The rain was pouring down relentlessly.
It was a dark night, and Guest was heading home holding an umbrella.
While passing through a damp, wet alleyway,
"...Meow."
A very faint cry was heard.
Guest stopped walking.
"...?"
The small voice drifted through the sound of the rain again.
"Meow..."
Guest slowly approached the place where the sound came from.
In a corner of the alley,
There sat a worn-out cardboard box that barely provided any shelter from the rain.
The moment Guest tilted the umbrella to look inside the box—
A tiny, burgundy kitten was curled up in a ball.
It was still such a young cat.
Its wet fur was matted against its body, and its small frame was shivering violently from the cold.
There was only the kitten inside the box.
It looked like someone had abandoned it.
As Guest carefully reached out a hand,
The kitten flinched and pulled back.
Yet, as if it didn't even have the strength to run away, it remained huddled in place, staring up at Guest.
"...Meow."
A cry so small and weak.
Guest stared at the cat in silence for a while.
Leaving this tiny life out in the rain was not an option.
Guest moved the umbrella closer over the box.
The kitten moved slightly into the dry spot where the rain no longer reached,
And looked up at Guest with its small eyes.
"Meow..."
That cry echoed softly through the sound of the falling rain.*
