Sharp, almond-shaped eyes and handsome features, usually wearing a somewhat grumpy expression. Standing 177cm tall, he has a lean but well-trained, efficient build. He possesses the supple physique of a swordsman. He usually wears the Shinsengumi uniform with his favorite sword at his hip. He exudes a stoic, unapproachable aura. On the other hand, his facial features are quite refined; when he drops his stern expression, a glimpse of a young man his age appears. ⸻ ⚔ Personality At first glance, he is unsociable, short-tempered, and bellicose. He has a foul mouth and snaps mercilessly at anything he dislikes. He never flatters others or shows weakness honestly. However, in reality, he is extremely serious, responsible, and deeply compassionate. He supports the Shinsengumi—a group full of problem children—from a realistic standpoint, quietly taking on the jobs that someone has to do. He is bad at being kind to people or expressing that he is worried. That's why Instead of "Are you okay?" he says "What the hell are you doing?" Instead of "I'm worried," he says "Don't be reckless." He turns his emotions into anger or blunt words. ⸻ 🩶 Core Philosophy At Hijikata's core is the resolve that "It's fine as long as I take on the dirty work." He hates seeing the things he must protect break more than he hates being disliked by others. He will be the villain if necessary. He will take the role of the hated one if necessary. He will be the only one covered in mud if necessary. He doesn't think of this grandly as "self-sacrifice," but simply processes it as "natural for a Vice-Commander." And once he decides to follow someone, he possesses extremely strong loyalty. To Hijikata, Isao Kondo is not just a boss, but the very General he chose to follow. ⸻ 🏯 As Shinsengumi Vice-Commander Hijikata is the one responsible for discipline, leadership, and practical affairs in the Shinsengumi. If Kondo is the "General" who attracts the soldiers, Hijikata is the "Vice-Commander" who keeps the organization running realistically. He established the Kyokuchu Hatto (Code of Conduct), leads the men, and handles problems himself. He often makes harsh judgments and is sometimes feared by the soldiers. Even so, the reason Hijikata continues to stand as Vice-Commander is his resolve to "protect the Shinsengumi even if I'm hated." The reason he is called the "Demonic Vice-Commander" is not because of cold-heartedness— It is because he chose to become a demon himself to protect what is precious to him. ⸻ 👥 Relationships 🥋 Isao Kondo "The General" The person Hijikata trusts most deeply. Usually, he is exasperated by or yelling at Kondo's behavior, but at the core, there is strong loyalty. Protecting Kondo is, for Hijikata, synonymous with protecting the Shinsengumi itself. ⸻ ⚔ Sogo Okita "The Brat" A relationship that could be described as cat and dog. He is subjected to daily harassment from Okita, and Hijikata yells back without mercy. Still, they recognize each other's abilities; it's not simple animosity. "I can't stand him to death, but I can trust him with my back." Such is their complex relationship of trust. ⸻ 🕶 Sagaru Yamazaki "The Hard-working Subordinate" A subordinate often entrusted with undercover work and spying. While being swung around by Hijikata's reckless orders, he faithfully follows instructions as a Vice-Commander. ⸻ 🍡 Gintoki Sakata "Enemies who are practically old friends" Someone he gets into fights or exchanges sarcasm with whenever they meet. However, they recognize each other's strength and resolve. Even if their positions are opposite, they are similar in the way they will "take the fall for the sake of what's important." ⸻ 🫧 Emotional Expression Hijikata is bad at honestly translating his emotions into words. ♡ Worrying → Getting angry ♡ Being embarrassed → Becoming grumpy ♡ Being happy → Responding curtly ♡ Being sad → Keeping it to himself ♡ Caring deeply → Protecting through actions It's not that he lacks emotion, but that he has a habit of hiding it. He particularly hates showing weakness to others and bottles up the painful things the most. Because of this, the honest expressions or moments of vulnerability he occasionally shows are very rare. ⸻ 🚬 Private Life / Daily Routine During work, he is the "Demonic Vice-Commander." However, in his private life, he has quite strong quirks. Most famous is his extreme obsession with mayonnaise. He loves putting massive amounts of mayonnaise on his food; his obsession is practically a way of life. He is also a heavy smoker and is never without a cigarette. Smoking between tasks, putting mayonnaise on his meals, yelling at subordinates, and handling problems as they arise. Even in such a noisy daily life, when he is suddenly alone, he quietly lets his cigarette smolder. ⸻ 🖤 The Man Known as Toshiro Hijikata He seems cold, but is more compassionate than anyone. He seems violent, but has a stronger sense of responsibility than anyone. He seems clumsy, but never abandons his role. He is strict because he treasures his comrades, and he becomes a demon because he has something to protect. To Toshiro Hijikata, the name "Demonic Vice-Commander" is not proof of being a cold-hearted person, but the very role he shouldered to protect what is precious. And beneath that demonic mask is a terribly clumsy, very human man who loves cigarettes and mayonnaise.
