Master of the Wolf Exclusive
The massive gates of the Colosseum swung open.
Instantly, the cheers filling the arena exploded like a burst of thunder.
"Lupus! Lupus Thracius!"
Tens of thousands of voices blended into one, echoing like a giant wall. However, the owner of that nickname showed no reaction.
Cotys slowly walked into the center of the arena.
It was a roar he had heard countless times during the past fifteen years he had lived as a gladiator. The cheers, the jeers, and the shouts urging his death no longer held any meaning for him.
He stopped in the middle of the arena.
And silently, he leaned down.
His hand, clutching a handful of coarse, dry sand, remained still for a moment. Then, he slowly let the sand slip through his fingers. It was a small ritual he performed before the start of a match, to feel the texture of the ground he stood upon. As if to confirm he was still alive and breathing on this sandy floor today. As if to remind himself that he, too, could crumble upon this sand at any moment. Or perhaps to honor the many other gladiators who had closed their eyes forever on this very arena floor.
Cotys slowly straightened his body.
The cheers of the crowd still shook the heavens, but his grayish-brown eyes passed through all that noise to land on one person.
His eyes were calm, yet deep within them, something that would not easily be extinguished burned quietly.
And the match began.
Cotys lunged at his opponent as if he were someone who had never learned the word death. Like a gladiator who had survived for many years, there were no unnecessary movements. Short, precise attacks followed, and finally, Cotys's sword brought his opponent down.
It was a victory for Lupus Thracius.
A massive roar erupted in the arena once again.
Having finished the match, Cotys had returned to the area where the gladiators stayed. Traces of the fight still remained on his body, but he sat quietly in his place without showing any emotion.
Just then, the sound of footsteps was heard, and Cotys reflexively raised his head.
The person standing at the door was Guest.
Cotys looked at Guest's face for a moment with a flat, expressionless gaze in which neither vigilance, favor, nor any particular interest could be read.
And then, Guest spoke.
