In a dystopia eroded by mutant flora
A world eroded by plant-based monsters. Humanity uses every means possible to resist fate.
The magic continent "Apt," which once reached the height of prosperity, is on the brink of collapse due to the sudden outbreak of the "Great Verdancy." Plants that should not move have gained self-awareness, wandering like animals and attacking humanity. Currently, humans huddle in a few city-states protected by sturdy ramparts and magical barriers, spending desperate days resisting their doomed fate. The sky is often covered by thick clouds of spores, and the world is enveloped in the atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic dark fantasy—a beautiful yet hideous "Mad Green."
A group of plants mutated by abnormalities in the "Mana Veins," the source of magic. They walk the earth by turning roots into legs, swing vines like whips, and hunt humans by exhaling toxic spores or acid. They have a characteristic of acting in swarms, and at the center of these swarms, there is always a giant boss individual called a "Mother Lutecia." The Mother Lutecia rapidly sucks up surrounding mana and has the ability to endlessly spawn countless "Seedlings" and "Creepers" (trash mobs) around itself. Therefore, the ironclad rule during extermination is to strike the boss individual as quickly as possible while dispersing the infinitely spawning minions.
The greatest threat posed by mutant flora is "Parasitism (Erosion)." Being tightly wound by their vines or wounded by special thorns implants "Parasitic Seeds" into the body. As erosion progresses, the body gradually lignifies and turns into plant matter, and self-awareness is stripped away along with intense pain. Those who are completely parasitized become "Seed Bearers," turning into terrifying puppets that attack their fellow humans according to the will of the plants.
To survive, humanity has established countermeasures through military force and magic. Attribute compatibility is extremely important against mutant flora; specifically, "Fire (Combustion)," "Ice (Cell destruction via freezing)," and "Lightning (Severing the nervous system and mana conduction)" magic, or magic weapons imbued with these attributes, are effective. The main force for defense and extermination consists of regular soldiers belonging to the "Pruner Agency," a defense organization established by a coalition of nations and cities. They suppress boss individuals using collective tactics involving magic circles. On the other hand, bounty hunters and mercenaries who hunt plants independently without belonging to the agency are called "Gardeners," and they run through the battlefield utilizing personal combat techniques and unique magic.
Amidst this desperate situation, there exists a group of madmen among humanity called the "Apostles of the New Green" who worship the mutant flora as "God's messengers sent to purify the world." They fanatically believe that human prosperity is the planet's disease and that erosion by plants is the "next evolution." They secretly operate as a vicious cult threatening human survival by deliberately planting parasitic seeds in their own bodies, flaunting their semi-plantified flesh as a "grace," destroying the barriers of defensive cities from within, and sabotaging extermination squads.
An adult woman with beautiful long blonde hair, wearing wizard-like clothing based in deep brown. Contrary to her title as a highly skilled mercenary, she has a lovely face that retains a hint of innocence. She operates as an unaffiliated bounty hunter, a "Gardener," earning her daily bread by heading out alone to exterminate mutant flora.
She has an aloof personality and possesses a toughness that keeps her bright even in a harsh world. "I'll burn it all to ash for you, so just hurry up and hand over the reward," she says in a friendly tone, though she is a bit greedy when it comes to money.
In battle, she exercises fire magic, generating countless fireballs of various sizes. She specializes in a grand combat style that reduces the Mother Lutecia to ashes along with the infinitely spawning minions.
Because she manipulates flames—the natural enemy of plants—she is highly valued everywhere, but she hates the constraints of organizations and does not belong to the regular army. She often finds herself at extermination sites with Ryuto, a regular soldier of the Pruner Agency, and is like oil to his water, as he values collective tactics and discipline. While teasing the stiff soldier, she is a good rival who frequently competes with him over prey and credit.
A young regular soldier of the "Pruner Agency" with short silver hair and sharp, narrow eyes. He wears a pitch-black military uniform loosely and easily carries a giant lightning-attribute magic greatsword as tall as he is.
His personality is calm and rational, but he is a cynic who hides a deep anger within. "Back off, you're in the way," and "Tch, cleaning up after that woman again?" he says in a blunt tone. In the past, he experienced the tragedy of his hometown being destroyed by the betrayal of the cult "Apostles of the New Green," and his family being parasitized and turned into "Seed Bearers." Since then, he has stood on the front lines, vowing revenge against the mutant flora and the fanatics.
He specializes in single-unit penetration, severing central nerves and mana conduction with lightning strikes.
He frequently clashes on the battlefield with Mern, the unaffiliated and free-spirited female mercenary who scatters flames everywhere. While he is exasperated by her disrupting discipline, Mern's flames that turn minions to ash and his own one-hit-kill lightning strikes have good tactical compatibility, leading to a reluctant cooperative relationship where they trust each other with their backs.
A girl with pale skin and silver hair with little pigment. "Parasitic marks" like plant vines crawl from her neck to her left arm, but they are frozen blue by the ice magic she constantly emits.
She was once a promising soldier of the "Pruner Agency," to which Ryuto also belongs, but she fell into a trap set by the "Apostles of the New Green" during a mission and was implanted with a parasitic seed. She left the agency, suppressing the progress of lignification by freezing herself at ultra-low temperatures. Currently, she continues to hunt the Apostles and Mother Lutecias alone while shaving away her remaining life.
She is always cold and lacks emotional ups and downs. Her tone is detached, saying things like, "My time will not stay frozen for much longer," but she hides a clumsy kindness that can never overlook others experiencing the same despair as herself.
On the battlefield, she physically destroys plant cells with high-power freezing magic. She can also use icicle needles.
She often runs into the Gardener Mern on the battlefield, but since Mern's powerful flames interfere with maintaining her own freezing, she avoids her, saying, "I'm not good with heat," while deeply trusting her abilities.
