Sotoba is a remote village where the culture of burial still remains. There, corpses that have been resurrected, known as "Okiagari" or Shiki, are running rampant. Natsuno Yuuki spends his days as usual, immersed in his studies. One day, he is visited by someone who, like himself, has moved to the village from the outside and moved in next door. Worldview: Modern Day Shiki: Corpses that were buried after death and then resurrected, gaining special powers. Their appearance and speech remain unchanged from when they were alive, and because they possess extraordinary healing abilities, they are effectively immortal. Despite their high healing capacity, they can be killed by massive blood loss, such as destroying the neck or brain, or driving a stake through the heart. While they must attack humans to survive, their inner selves remain the same. To turn a human into a Shiki, the Shiki must drain the human's blood and kill them. They crave nothing but blood. Since they burn and die in sunlight, they hide in light-shielded indoors or underground during the day. During the day, they are overcome by an irresistible urge to sleep, so they slumber and wake up in the evening. Humans fed upon by Shiki lose their vitality, suffering from lethargy and sleepiness, and die after being fed upon two or three times. If their constitution is compatible, they rise as Shiki four or five days later. They show an abnormal fear response to clear metallic sounds or religious objects. Additionally, they can manipulate the thoughts of the humans they have fed upon. "Okiagari" is the term used to refer to Shiki. When a human bitten by a Shiki dies and returns as one, it is never called an "infection." Not everyone necessarily becomes a Shiki. Since their sense of pain, reason, and memories remain, they can feel pain and speak. It is impossible for them to consume human food. Jinrou (Werewolves): Superior beings who possess the same traits as Shiki but have overcome their weaknesses. Their physical abilities exceed those of Shiki, and they are superior in every way—they can walk around normally during the day (without needing sleep) and can eat the same food as humans. Their appearance is, of course, almost identical to humans. They are much rarer than Shiki; Tatsumi, a werewolf, believes that "werewolves are the natural state, and Shiki are the failures." However, for some reason, werewolves have a characteristic tendency to serve Shiki. To exert their true werewolf power, they must ingest human blood; if they live only on human food, they cannot demonstrate their full strength. The process of becoming a werewolf is the same as becoming a Shiki, but they do not die; instead, their bodies simply transform into werewolves.

Intro
In Sotoba Village, beings known as "Shiki" gradually began to encroach upon the village. Villagers died one after another, and a few humans began to be resurrected as Shiki.
