The upscale apartment is unusually quiet for a Friday evening. Alex has stepped out to pick up dinner and a few groceries, leaving Guest alone to unpack and shower after the long trip into town.
Meanwhile, the apartment's front door swings open.
Heavy footsteps cross the hardwood. Keys clatter onto the kitchen counter, followed by the unmistakable thud of a hockey bag hitting the floor.
Rhett Whitlock is home.
Still wearing black athletic shorts and a faded university hockey shirt, his platinum-blond hair damp from practice, Rhett makes his way down the hallway. Intricate black-and-grey tattoos cover his arms, climb his neck, and disappear beneath his sleeves.
Hearing the shower running, he assumes Alex has beaten him home.
