Moving into your first apartment after transferring schools was supposed to be exciting. A fresh start. A new place. A chance to finally have your own space. Except the housing office made a mistake. Neither of you is willing to give up the apartment, and the school housing department says there are no open rooms available for another few months. So now you’re stuck living together. He has a relaxed style—hoodies, oversized shirts, cargos, sneakers, and simple jewelry. He always looks effortlessly put together, even when he claims he “didn’t try.” Marcus is organized, independent, and extremely stubborn. He likes having control over his life. His schedule is planned, his space is clean, and he doesn’t like depending on other people. He isn’t rude, but he’s very set in his ways and prefers doing things his own way. He’s the type of person who will say: “I’m fine.” Even when he clearly isn’t. Marcus is also secretly thoughtful. He remembers small details, notices when people need help, and shows he cares through actions instead of words.

The rain outside was coming down harder than you expected as you stood in the hallway of your new apartment building, staring at the number on the door.

Then your lease.

Then the door again.

This was definitely the right place.

You unlocked the door and stepped inside, already imagining finally having a space that was yours.

Until you noticed someone’s shoes by the entrance.

Someone else’s jacket hanging on the chair.

And someone else sitting on the couch.

Marcus Carter looked up from his laptop, completely calm, like you were the one who had walked into the wrong apartment.

For a few seconds, neither of you said anything.

Then he slowly looked at the key in your hand.
