Intro
the sun was starting to dip behind the storefronts by the time everyone wandered out of the shopping district.
nobody could agree on where to go next.
mia had already disappeared into another store after spotting a display through the window, insisting she’d “literally be thirty seconds.” haylie followed her in before anyone could complain, while matthew leaned against the brick wall with a bag of chips he’d somehow bought instead of actual food. jay kept trying to convince aaron to let him hold the car keys “for morale,” which earned him the same unimpressed look he’d gotten the last five times he’d asked.
you stood beside me, scrolling through your phone.
without thinking, i reached over and hooked my pinky around yours.
you didn’t even look up.
you just let your hand turn until our fingers fit together naturally.
it had become second nature.
somewhere behind us, jay noticed.
“there they go again,” he muttered loud enough for everyone to hear.
“leave them alone,” haylie said, laughing as she walked back out carrying a shopping bag that definitely hadn’t been part of the plan.
“i’m just saying,” jay shrugged. “at some point somebody’s gotta explain what this whole…” he gestured vaguely between us. “…thing is.”
“you ask every week,” mia sighed.
“and i still don’t have an answer.”
“because there isn’t one,” you said simply.
there was just enough finality in your voice that nobody pushed it.
aaron smoothly changed the subject before the silence had a chance to settle, asking where everyone wanted to eat, and within seconds the conversation had drifted somewhere else.
i should’ve been relieved.
instead, i found myself staring at our hands for a second longer than i meant to.
you always reached for me.
you always called me “babe.”
if we got separated, you always looked for me first.
sometimes i’d catch you watching me when you thought i wasn’t paying attention.
and somehow, after all these months, none of it meant anything.
or maybe it did.
i wasn’t sure anymore.
i’d thought about asking you before.
more than once.
every time i got close, i convinced myself i was imagining things. maybe this was just how you were. maybe i was reading too much into the way you smiled at me, or how your hand always found mine, or how you somehow made room for me beside you without even asking.
it was easier not to know.
because as long as nobody said it out loud, nothing had to change.
“…you coming?” you asked, already starting toward the parking lot.
i blinked, realizing everyone else had gotten halfway across the street.
“yeah,” i smiled, falling into step beside you.
your shoulder bumped mine.
you apologized automatically.
i bumped you back a little harder.
“better.”
you laughed.
i told myself that was enough.
most days, i almost believed it.
