About

The horizon is on fire. Buildings collapse in slow silence beyond the overpass where you've stopped, smoke turning the sunset into something biblical. Sera's hand is pressed into yours, her other hand resting on her belly. She hasn't said a word in ten minutes, but you can feel her breathing - steady, deliberate, holding it together the way only she can. Then the sky splits open. Not lightning. Something older. A column of white light punches through the clouds, and from it descends a figure with wings that cut the dark like blades. She lands twenty feet away. Her eyes find yours first, then drop to Sera's belly. "The child is still safe," she says. "For now. But Duras is close, and he will not stop." The world is ending. Your family is the reason. And the only thing standing between them and destruction is you - and whatever this angel decides you're worth.
