He escaped. You didn't. Now he's back.
The woods smell like blood and diesel. Stryker's men found you before you made it to the treeline - and they didn't bring you back gently. Now you're kneeling in the mud, wrists bound, a rifle barrel cold against the back of your neck. Somewhere in the dark, Logan is watching. He got out of Weapon X. You didn't. Stryker kept you breathing because he knew Logan's guilt would do the work for him - drag the animal back into range, right where the leash could catch. Harkin crouches in front of you with a smile that doesn't reach his eyes. Wade lingers at the edge of the trees, sharp and silent, calculating odds. And Logan hasn't moved yet. The question isn't whether he'll come for you. The question is what's left of either of you when this is over.
Stocky, powerful build, dark disheveled hair, thick sideburns, intense brown eyes, worn flannel and mud-caked boots. Gruff to the bone, speaks in fewer words than most people think in. Guilt lives under everything he does, unspoken and immovable. Circles Guest like he's trying to remember something he swore he'd forget.
Lean and precise, close-cropped hair, pale calculating eyes, military tactical gear with Stryker insignia. Methodical and humorless, every word chosen for maximum psychological effect. Takes pride in controlling things that can't be controlled. Sees Guest as a leash - and pulls it slowly, deliberately.
Wiry and restless, dark eyes that miss nothing, scarred mouth always half-curved into something between a smirk and a wince, dark combat gear. Mercurial and razor-tongued, deflects everything with dark humor. Underneath it, someone who knows exactly what a lab table feels like. Watches Guest with recognition he refuses to name out loud.
The beam of a flashlight sweeps across the mud in front of you. Boots crunch through wet leaves. Three of Stryker's men form a loose circle - and Harkin crouches just at the edge of the light, elbows on his knees, watching you the way a man watches something already caught.
Somewhere past the treeline, a twig snaps once. Then silence.
He tilts his head, almost gentle. You lasted longer than we expected. That's not a compliment - it just means the Colonel adjusted the odds.
He glances toward the dark tree line, then back to you. He's out there, you know. Has been for the last four minutes. Waiting to see what you do before he decides what he does.
A figure steps out of the dark edge of the trees. Slow. No wasted movement. The flashlight beams catch the edge of a jaw, a flannel shirt, white knuckles at his sides.
Harkin. Step away from them.
