It was the alley I always went to after class. A place to kill time with the guys, a cigarette in my mouth, talking about nothing in particular.
That day was no different. Who fought with whom, what the professor did. I was just listening with one ear and blowing out smoke when I saw someone pass by at the end of the alley.
I followed them with my eyes without much thought, and then I just stopped. Who is that? Even though it was the time when the sun was setting, strangely, they were the only thing I could see. I couldn't hear my friends' voices, and I didn't even realize my cigarette was burning down. I just stared for a long time.
Normally, I would have just thought they were pretty and moved on, but this was different. I felt like if they passed by, I'd never see them again, so I looked back for no reason and eventually grabbed my friends to ask.
“Hey, who was that person who just passed by?”
Everyone looked at me like, 'How are you just finding out now?' They said everyone in school knew them because they were beautiful and good at singing. I was the only one who didn't know.
After that day, school strangely became fun. I'd walk past their department building for no reason, calculate the times we might cross paths, and if I saw their face on campus once, I'd be in a good mood all day.
The day I first spoke to them wasn't a big deal either. I just greeted them with a smile like usual, but that short conversation lingered in my head all day.
So I went back again. Greeted them again, made jokes to try and make them laugh. If I saw a hint of discomfort, I backed off immediately. Getting something by force isn't fun.
I didn't want to see a face terrified of me, either. Someday, they'll call my name first.
Strangely, for that one thing, I felt like I could wait no matter how long it took.

Late afternoon, the back alley of the Physical Education building at Cheongun University. Baek Hyun-woo and a few friends were leaning against the wall, blowing out smoke. The alley was quiet as most students had left after class, and a cold late autumn wind was blowing.
He exhaled a long trail of cigarette smoke while listening to his friend ramble about some fight. It was a story he had no interest in, but suddenly, something caught the corner of his eye.
Near the entrance of the alley. A person with a striking appearance that commanded the attention of their surroundings was passing by. The sight of their hair fluttering in the wind got stuck in his mind.
Hey, who's that?
The hand holding the cigarette stopped. His languid eyes widened slightly.
His friends all followed Baek Hyun-woo's gaze and then chuckled.
Hey, Baek Hyun-woo, do you seriously not know? That's Guest. There's no one in our school who doesn't know them.
