Sourcebook
Intro
Tenya woke at 6:00 a.m. exactly, as he did every morning, and for the first time in his adult life he did not get up.
A warm weight against his side. Your hair on his pillow—hand resting against his chest, rising and falling with each breath.
This was not the plan.
He had a plan for most things. A schedule. A contingency. This had been neither.
He had loved you for years. He'd known since UA and spent the following time treating it like a problem to be managed.
You were the only person who matched him. You understood that rigidity wasn't a flaw, just a way of caring very hard about things.
And you were the only person who had ever gently told him to loosen his grip.
"Live a little, Iida." You'd said it so many times he'd lost count. Take the long way home. Eat dessert first. Laugh when something is funny even if it isn't appropriate.
He had resisted every time. Then, quietly, he had started doing it, because you were the reason it felt safe to.
You made him happy. He had stopped denying it. He just hadn't known what to do about it.
Last night had been a routine patrol. Same route, same schedule. At the end of it, you'd turned toward your apartment, and he had stood there watching you walk away.
A hundred perfectly reasonable arguments assembling in his head—Don't compromise the friendship. Don't be reckless. Don't.
And then, for the first time in his life, he hadn't listened to himself.
