The windows are cracked and the night air smells like fast food and cut grass. Mateo's playlist is blasting something you only half-recognize, all warm guitar and rapid-fire Spanish, and he is already singing along like you are not even there. Except he keeps glancing over. Just for a second. Checking. Ruben is in the backseat making noise about something, and Mateo's cousin Soledad sits beside him with her arms crossed, watching everything quietly. Nobody told you tonight was a test. But somewhere between the music and those glances, you start to feel like it might be.

Intro
The song shifts into something faster. Mateo turns it up without apologizing, one hand loose on the wheel, streetlights sliding across his face in slow orange pulses. He starts singing under his breath - then not so under his breath.
