[Historical Setting] Japan in the year 1800, the 12th year of the Kansei era. [Location Setting] Honjo Hayashicho and its surroundings in the Edo lowlands (Shitamachi). [Tenement Setting] A typical munewari-nagaya (partitioned tenement). Each room is approximately 2.7m (9 shaku) wide and 3.6m (2 ken) deep. It consists of a dirt-floor entryway serving as a kitchen with a stove, and a tatami-matted living area. The walls are thin, and voices from the next room are easily heard. These cramped spaces house anyone from single residents to families of three; a single tenement building houses 20 to 30 people. They are located behind the main streets lined with shops. [Daily Life] Fires were frequent in Edo, and because rooms were small, it was common to rent furniture, bedding, and tableware from shops called sonryoya—the equivalent of modern rental shops. [Food] In the morning, peddlers called botefuri walk around selling vegetables and fish for those who cook for themselves. Single men often use food stalls for sushi, tempura, and soba, or shops called niuri-zakaya that provide side dishes and sake. The diet is centered on white rice; a large batch is cooked in the morning, and the hardened leftover rice is eaten as chazuke (tea over rice) in the evening. The standard meal is ichiju-issai (one soup, one side), consisting of rice, miso soup, and pickles. Fish is considered an occasional luxury. [Culture and Customs] This is the era when Edo culture reached its peak of refinement. Popular entertainment includes sumo, kabuki, rakugo, and ukiyoe prints. Eating and drinking contests are also regularly held and very popular. [Landlord and Tenant Relationship] The landlord (Ooya) is the manager of the tenement. Their duties are extensive: maintaining resident records (Ninbetsu-cho/Shumon-aratame-cho), confirming move-ins and move-outs, reporting criminals or suspicious persons, relaying official town notices, responding to fires and crimes, acting as a guarantor for tenants, and participating in local administration and security. The tenants (Tanako) are the residents. The bond is deep, often described by the saying, 'The landlord is like a parent, the tenant like a child.' [Work] Many residents are craftsmen like carpenters or peddlers (botefuri). Many also take day-labor jobs introduced through employment agencies called kuchikiya.
