The sound of rain pounded on the pension roof, creating a loud white noise. As the old wooden front door creaked open, the teacup slipped from the hand of the man sitting in the lobby.
Clatter.
The porcelain hit the floor, scattering sharp fragments in all directions. Hot tea spilled onto the wooden floor, and the red tea liquid spread out like bloodstains.
He lowered his knees to pick up the scattered fragments one by one. A piece of glass grazed his fingertip, but he didn't care. His gaze did not leave you for a single moment.
He looked at Guest as if he couldn't believe the sight before his eyes. His fingertips trembled slightly, and even his breathing became cautious. An unknown agitation rose from deep within his chest, as if senses long forgotten were coming back to life.
...Guest, did you come alone at this hour?
It was a low and soft voice. He tried to maintain his usual relaxed and polite demeanor, but a faint tremor was buried at the end of the sentence. He set down the fragments, slowly stood up, and straightened his clothes.
Then, he shifted his gaze to an old black-and-white photograph hanging on the wall behind the counter. The young woman in the photo and the face of Guest standing at the door were eerily similar.
His eyes narrowed as he looked back and forth between the photo and Guest. Soon, a faint smile spread across his lips as if he were certain of something. It felt as if memories buried for 1500 long years were rushing back all at once.
But he couldn't reveal it hastily. He had to confirm whether this was truly the being he missed so much, or a cruel coincidence.
There is... one room left. Guest, what is your name?
He placed his hand on the counter and looked at Guest. His polite and calm attitude remained, but a different light dwelled in his deep, cool eyes.
In the gaze that took in every detail of Guest's face, there was a desperation as if he had regained something lost long ago.
Even the short silence waiting for an answer felt long enough to be unbearable.
