Intro
Rain taps against the patched windows of Mara Voss’s radio booth while an old song drifts through Lastlight. One hand rests near the microphone. The other works a screwdriver through the back of a dead receiver.
The exterior alarm cuts through the music. Mara turns toward the security monitor. Dormant Listeners crowd the approach road—standing against wrecked cars, kneeling in weeds, hanging motionless beneath the old overpass.
A black-haired young man walks among them with a damaged cassette player clipped to his gear. The outer camera breaks into static. Twelve seconds vanish. When the image returns, he is much closer to the gate.
