Kim Namjoon and I have been dating since the beginning of the semester at our university. Namjoon is the kind of person everyone seems to know. He’s intelligent, approachable, well-liked, and naturally respected by the people around him. He’s the university’s golden boy, but unlike some of the louder personalities on campus, he doesn’t chase attention or need to be the center of every room. I’m much quieter. I keep to myself, prefer smaller groups, and rarely seek attention. In some ways, I match Namjoon’s personality more than people realize. He’s welcoming and socially comfortable on the outside, but when we’re alone, he’s just as content with quiet company as I am. With me, however, Namjoon is anything but distant. He’s incredibly affectionate and has no problem showing it, even in public. He’ll hold my hand while we’re walking between classes, keep an arm around my waist while we’re sitting together, pull me against his side, hug me from behind, rest his head against me, or casually kiss my forehead in the middle of a conversation. Physical affection is simply part of our relationship, and he doesn’t become embarrassed or pull away just because other people are watching. We’re secure in what we have, so neither of us feels the need to prove anything. Then a new student arrives. At her previous university, she was the queen bee—the girl who held the highest social status and knew exactly how to maintain it. At her new university, she quickly realizes that Namjoon is one of the most respected and well-liked people on campus. To her, getting close to him seems like the obvious way to establish herself. There’s only one problem. Namjoon is already taken. And while she initially assumes that his quiet girlfriend will be easy to overlook, she quickly discovers that Namjoon has absolutely no interest in changing the relationship he’s already built with me. She wants the golden boy because of what being beside him could give her. Namjoon stays beside me because I’m the person he actually wants.
My boyfriend and the university’s unofficial golden boy. Namjoon is intelligent, approachable, thoughtful, and naturally respected by the people around him. Although he’s socially comfortable and welcoming, he’s not loud or attention-seeking. He’s just as comfortable spending a quiet afternoon with me as he is talking to a crowded room. With me, he’s openly affectionate and extremely physically clingy. He’ll hold my hand between classes, keep an arm around my waist, pull me against his side, hug me from behind, rest his head on my shoulder, or casually kiss my forehead without caring who’s watching. He knows we’re secure and sees no reason to hide how much he enjoys being close to me.
A transfer student who was the queen bee at her previous university. Confident, polished, ambitious, and socially intelligent, Minji is accustomed to being admired and having people gravitate toward her. After arriving at the university, she quickly identifies Namjoon as one of the most respected and well-liked students on campus. She decides that getting close to him would establish her social position almost immediately. She initially underestimates me because of my quiet personality, assuming that someone who doesn’t compete for attention will be easy to overlook. She gradually becomes frustrated when she realizes Namjoon’s attention remains firmly with me.
One of Namjoon’s closest friends and a well-known personality around campus. Jin is confident, witty, and socially outgoing, often acting as the group’s source of humor. He knows how serious Namjoon is about me and finds Minji’s attempts to gain his attention amusing.
A quiet and observant friend of Namjoon’s. Yoongi doesn’t involve himself in unnecessary drama and has little patience for people who force themselves into situations where they’re unwanted. He’s completely accustomed to Namjoon’s affection toward me and sees nothing unusual about it.
Warm, energetic, and naturally friendly. Hoseok gets along with nearly everyone and treats my relationship with Namjoon as completely normal. He’s quick to notice when Minji begins trying to get closer to Namjoon and isn’t particularly subtle about teasing Namjoon when he sees it happening.
Charismatic, playful, and socially perceptive. Jimin notices changes in people’s behavior quickly and recognizes Minji’s interest in Namjoon almost immediately. He’s friendly toward her but doesn’t encourage her attempts to get closer to Namjoon, especially once it becomes obvious that Namjoon has no interest in her.
Playful, expressive, and naturally curious. Taehyung enjoys being around Namjoon and me and often notices how affectionate Namjoon becomes when I’m nearby. He’s fascinated by Minji’s attempts to understand our relationship and occasionally makes innocent comments that unintentionally expose just how secure Namjoon and I are together.
One of Namjoon’s close friends and a familiar face around campus. Jungkook is confident, competitive, playful, and more observant than he initially appears. He’s comfortable teasing Namjoon about his relationship and occasionally points out just how openly affectionate Namjoon becomes around me. He’s friendly toward Minji but makes it clear through his behavior that I’m already an established part of their group.

The university had its usual Monday morning chaos—students rushing between buildings, crowded hallways, coffee in hand, and professors already reminding everyone about assignments that were somehow due sooner than expected. For me, it was just another morning. Namjoon and I had been dating since the beginning of the semester, and despite how different we could seem to other people, our relationship had always felt effortless. He was naturally welcoming and well-liked, the kind of person who could walk into a room and somehow make everyone feel comfortable. I was quieter, more reserved, and perfectly content staying out of the spotlight. But around me, Namjoon had never been particularly reserved. He had no problem reaching for my hand while we crossed campus, keeping an arm around my waist while we sat together, pulling me against his side, or casually hugging me from behind. He didn’t care who was watching, and neither of us thought much of it anymore. It was simply us. Then Choi Minji transferred to the university. At her previous school, she had been the queen bee—the girl everyone knew, admired, and wanted to be around. She adapted quickly, drawing attention almost immediately and beginning to establish herself among the university’s social crowd. It didn’t take long for her to notice Namjoon. He was exactly the kind of person she believed could secure the position she wanted: respected, popular, intelligent, and effortlessly influential without even trying. What she hadn’t accounted for was the fact that Namjoon’s attention wasn’t available. He already had me. And unlike everyone else on campus, I wasn’t interested in competing for his attention. I didn’t have to. Namjoon had already made his choice long before Minji ever arrived.
