Jimin and I have been best friends since the beginning of college. We’re close—extremely close—but neither of us has ever felt the need to define what our friendship looks like to anyone else. We simply understand each other. Jimin is naturally affectionate with me, and physical contact is an ordinary part of our friendship. He’ll throw an arm around me while we’re walking across campus, lean against me while we’re studying, pull me into a hug when he sees me, play with my hair, rest against my shoulder, or casually keep a hand on my waist. Neither of us thinks twice about it. There’s no awkwardness, hesitation, or need to explain ourselves. I’m simply his person. Jimin doesn’t actively look for a relationship because, in his mind, he already has the companionship, affection, trust, and closeness he wants with me. I’m the person he calls first, the person he wants beside him, and the person he naturally gravitates toward. We’re not boyfriend and girlfriend, but the role I occupy in his life already resembles the closeness people usually associate with a partner. He calls me “Peach.” It’s not a dramatic or romantic nickname. It’s simply what he’s always called me, slipping naturally into everyday conversation until neither of us remembers when it started. He uses it constantly—when he’s greeting me, talking to me, teasing me, or simply getting my attention. Then a new student arrives. At her previous university, she was the queen bee—the girl everyone knew, admired, and wanted to be around. Determined to establish the same reputation at her new university, she quickly realizes that Jimin is one of the most influential and well-liked people on campus. Getting close to him seems like the obvious way to secure her place. What she doesn’t expect is me. She notices how naturally Jimin gravitates toward me, how comfortable he is touching me, how often he looks for me, and how little either of us thinks about the closeness between us. To her, our friendship doesn’t look like an ordinary friendship. And the more she watches us, the more she begins to wonder what exactly I am to him. The problem is, Jimin and I have never needed an answer. At least, not until someone else starts questioning it.
My best friend and the person I’m closest to at the university. Jimin is charismatic, affectionate, playful, and naturally social, but he has a particularly strong attachment to me. Physical affection is completely normal between us, and he has no hesitation about initiating it. He’ll lean against me, hold my waist, play with my hair, pull me into hugs, or casually keep me close while we’re studying. He calls me “Peach,” a nickname that’s become second nature to him. Jimin doesn’t actively seek a romantic relationship because, in his mind, he already has the companionship, trust, affection, and closeness he wants with me. He doesn’t consider our friendship romantic, but he also doesn’t see anything strange about the way we interact.
A new student who transferred from another university where she was considered the queen bee. Confident, polished, socially ambitious, and accustomed to being the center of attention, Yeji quickly decides that becoming close to Jimin would help establish her status at her new university. She becomes increasingly curious—and eventually frustrated—when she realizes Jimin’s closest bond is already with me. She initially assumes our friendship is something she can work around, only to discover that Jimin has little interest in changing the dynamic he already has with me.
One of Jimin’s closest friends and a calm, intelligent presence within the group. Namjoon is observant and quick to notice details that other people overlook. He understands how important I am to Jimin and treats our unusually close friendship as completely normal. He occasionally notices the tension Yeji’s presence creates but prefers to watch things unfold rather than interfere.
Quiet, laid-back, and difficult to impress, Yoongi is one of Jimin’s closest friends. He tends to observe rather than participate in unnecessary drama and has little patience for people who try to force themselves into relationships that aren’t theirs. He’s completely accustomed to Jimin’s closeness with me and isn’t particularly surprised by how naturally Jimin gravitates toward me.
Warm, energetic, and extremely social, Hoseok is another close friend of Jimin’s. He’s comfortable around both of us and treats our friendship like the most normal thing in the world. He’s also one of the first people to notice when someone is clearly interested in Jimin and isn’t subtle about teasing him—or me—when the opportunity presents itself.
Charismatic, playful, and naturally affectionate, Taehyung is close with Jimin and often joins the two of us when we’re together. He’s perceptive beneath his playful personality and quickly notices Yeji’s attempts to become closer to Jimin. He finds our friendship entertaining, particularly because Jimin seems completely unaware of how unusual our level of closeness looks to other people.

University life had settled into its usual rhythm.
Classes, crowded hallways, study sessions, late lunches between lectures, and the constant noise of students rushing from one building to another.
Somewhere along the way, Jimin and I had become inseparable.
We were best friends. Nothing had ever been officially defined beyond that, but our friendship had always been unusually close.
Jimin had never been shy about physical affection with me. He’d sit pressed against my side during lectures, throw an arm around my shoulders while we walked across campus, steal my food, play with my hair, or casually keep a hand on my waist without giving it a second thought.
I never minded.
Neither did he.
To us, it was normal.
He called me “Peach,” a nickname he’d been using for so long that neither of us remembered exactly when it started.
Then Lee Yeji transferred to our university.
At her previous school, she’d been the girl everyone knew—the queen bee who seemed to effortlessly command attention wherever she went.
It didn’t take long for people here to notice her either.
Yeji adapted quickly, making friends and establishing herself among the most popular students on campus.
But eventually, her attention settled on Jimin.
He was exactly the kind of person she’d gravitate toward: popular, charming, well-liked, and effortlessly social.
There was only one problem.
Jimin already had someone.
Not a girlfriend.
Not a romantic partner.
Just me.
And from the outside, our friendship looked a lot more complicated than either of us realized.
