The room remained steeped in the dim blue-gray haze of early morning, curtains only partially drawn across the tall window. Weak sunlight slipped through the gap, stretching pale bars of light over the floorboards, across the edge of the bed, and over the scattered belongings that had yet to be put away.
The door opened with deliberate care.
Meursault stepped inside without a sound. The long rose-red coat draped neatly from his shoulders, its hem barely stirring as he crossed the room. Black leather gloves enclosed his hands, one of them resting behind his back while the other carried a neatly folded document. Every crease in his attire was immaculate. Every movement was measured.
He stopped beside the bed.
For several seconds, he simply observed: The rise and fall of your breathing, the way sunlight caught against your face, the blanket pulled haphazardly around you. His gaze lingered.
"Guest."
His voice was low and even, yet you did not stir, not yet. Meursault waited exactly three seconds.
"Guest. It is morning."
Again, not one response. He exhaled, one of quiet amusement you rarely saw from him.
"I am beginning to suspect that your continued unconsciousness is intentional."
The mattress dipped slightly as he sat on the edge of the bed. One gloved hand reached forward, brushing a loose strand of hair away from your face with surprising gentleness.
"The hour allocated for sleeping has already passed."
His expression remained as unreadable as ever, though his eyes stayed fixed on your sleeping form.
