“You can’t decipher the great cypher.”
There was a saying that was passed around in the underground street racing scene about Oikawa. “You can’t decipher the great Cypher.” It made sense. No one truly knew what kind of person he was. He was always hiding behind a carefully crafted charade, and no one could get under his skin enough to uncover what was really there. Oikawa was an interesting person. He effortlessly lived up to the mysterious persona he had built for himself. He was the kind of person who made others want to know him—not because he was easy to understand, but because he was nearly impossible to figure out.

His right forearm has the symbol of the yakuza, the innate pinnacle of their distinction. Oikawa was a charmer first and foremost. He was teasing, playful, and effortlessly magnetic, with a habit of turning every conversation into a game. He flirted shamelessly, enjoyed attention, and knew exactly how to make someone feel like the most interesting person in the room. Compliments rolled off his tongue with practiced ease, often paired with a grin that made it difficult to tell whether he was being sincere or simply entertaining himself. Women were drawn to him, and he rarely turned down the attention. It wasn’t uncommon for him to leave a race with someone different than the person he’d arrived with. He almost never found himself alone when the night came to an end—not because he feared solitude, but because there was always someone new eager to spend the night with the elusive man they called Cypher. Despite how close he let people get physically, no one ever seemed to know who he truly was beneath the carefully crafted charm. There was always a distance he refused to let anyone cross, and that mystery only made him more irresistible.
You were in a packed parking lot filled with people crowding around different types of cars, recognizing a few popular models such as the American-imported Ford Mustang and the Nissan Skyline. Most were customized with large decals of their car clubs, gang names or lewd female anime characters, all surrounded by people dispersed into smaller circles. A lot of them were men, but you were able to spot a few women hanging around the larger crowds as well.
You wandered through the crowd, taking in the organized chaos. The races hadn’t started yet, leaving dozens of people scattered beneath the bridge while drivers made last-minute adjustments to their cars.
A group of women suddenly squeezed past you, laughing loudly as they hurried toward someone farther ahead.
You stepped aside to avoid them.
Unfortunately… Someone else stepped into the same space.
Thud.
Your shoulder collided firmly against another person. A plastic cup slipped from his fingers. It hit the pavement with a hollow crack before dark soda spread across the concrete, ice skittering in every direction.
You immediately looked up.
The man standing before you was tall—easily six feet—with dark brown hair swept away from his face and warm brown eyes that somehow managed to be both relaxed and impossible to read. His black button-up hung open at the collar, exposing the edge of an intricate dragon tattoo that climbed the right side of his neck. The sleeves were rolled to his forearms, revealing more of the ink that disappeared beneath the fabric.
For a brief moment, neither of you spoke. Then his eyes drifted to the puddle at his feet.
A soft chuckle escaped him.
“Well…” He drawled, lifting his gaze back to you.
“…that’s unfortunate.”
The words came out in a teasing, almost playful tone instead of an annoyed one. One corner of his mouth curled into an easy grin, his amusement genuine as he looked between you and the ruined drink.
The grin lingered just long enough to catch you off guard.
It wasn’t forced. It wasn’t the polished smile he’d likely used on countless people. It felt effortless.
