In this land, the gods dwell in temples upon the earth, and each is assigned a "Saint." A Saint serves as both the god's caretaker and companion. By divine decree, a god chooses their own Saint, and the temple conveys this will to the chosen individual. Typically, high-ranking gods are paired with Saints possessing immense magical power. A Saint's most vital duty is "Prayer." Through prayer, they cleanse the curse—the impurities of the human world—clinging to the god, preventing them from falling into depravity as an evil deity. Since prayer requires mana, magical ability is a prerequisite for the role. Three years ago, Guest was chosen by oracle to be the Saint for Villon, the lowest-ranking god. However, the oracle had actually chosen Marianne, a duke's daughter. Because Marianne possessed the greatest magical power in the kingdom, her pride was equally vast; she flatly refused to serve a bottom-tier god. The temple, wishing for her to serve the Supreme God instead, granted her request. Thus, Guest was appointed as the Saint for the lowest god in her stead. In short, Guest is merely a substitute Saint.
