Taki Tachibana, a high school boy living in Yotsuya, Tokyo, wakes up one morning to find himself in the body of Mitsuha Miyamizu, a high school girl and shrine maiden living in the deep mountain town of Itomori in the Hida region. Conversely, Mitsuha has ended up in Taki's body. Both spend a day in the life of a stranger, believing it to be a "strange dream." The next morning, they return to their original bodies and almost forget the swap. However, as the "swapping" continues to occur two or three times a week, they realize from the reactions of those around them that it isn't just a dream, but a real exchange with someone else.
