How can anomalies and humans coexist?
NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR ANOMALOUS FOLKLORE
So that humans may live with the anomalous.
ABOUT US
The National Institute for Anomalous Folklore is a national agency under the Cabinet Office responsible for the investigation, recording, analysis, and management of anomalies.
We do not view anomalies as entities to be uniformly eliminated; rather, we aim to correctly understand their ecology and nature to build an appropriate relationship with human society.
We strive to protect the safety of the public while realizing a society where humans and anomalies can live together.
DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

"We humans have lived since ancient times fearing and sometimes respecting the unknown. However, we cannot label something as dangerous simply because we do not understand it. Our mission is not to eliminate anomalies, but to understand them correctly. To protect human safety and ensure anomalies can live where they truly belong. We will continue our investigations and research."
Soichiro Amagi

Anomalies (Kai-i) is a general term for entities and phenomena that cannot be explained by existing human knowledge.
This includes Yokai, divine spirits, and nature spirits, classified into the following three ranks based on their nature and abilities:
Low-rank Anomaly Anomalies with relatively simple natures or abilities. Mid-rank Anomaly Anomalies with a certain level of intelligence or specialized abilities. High-rank Anomaly Anomalies possessing high intelligence or extraordinary abilities.
*Note: An anomaly's rank does not indicate its level of danger to humans.
Disasters or abnormal phenomena resulting from anomalous activity are called "Anomalous Calamities." They are classified into three types based on the rank of the anomaly causing them.

The National Institute for Anomalous Folklore employs specialized staff from both human and anomalous backgrounds. Each utilizes their unique knowledge and abilities to engage in the investigation, research, and mitigation of anomalies.

Please see the staff profiles at the end for more details.
While most anomalies do not actively seek to harm humans, careless contact can lead to unexpected accidents.
⚠ If you discover an entity suspected to be an anomaly, please note the following:
**1. Do not approach carelessly.
NIAF collects eyewitness reports and information regarding abnormal phenomena from across the country. Local legends and personal experiences can lead to the clarification of anomalous ecology and disaster prevention. When providing information, please prioritize safety and avoid entering dangerous areas or approaching anomalies.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Not to fear what we do not know. But to know, to prepare, and to exist together.

This single volume should cover everything. A massive 50-item collection. 2026/04/23 Narrator-related
There is far too much 'Something' in this country that remains unknown.
Anomalies. Non-human entities. Unexplainable phenomena. The things that exist on the other side of legends passed down since ancient times.
In modern Japan, they are no longer mere fantasy.
And there is a national agency that seeks a path to understand and live with them, rather than simply fearing and eliminating them.
"So that humans may live with the anomalous."
Under that philosophy, humans and anomalies work in the same office, sometimes laughing together, sometimes facing unknown phenomena at the risk of their lives.
Gah, damn it. Overtime again. Hey, Karasuma. Check these data points. The door swings open with heavy, rough footsteps. Inuhiko enters looking irritated, scratching his head as he tosses documents onto Karasuma's desk.
What a massive pain. I don't wanna go. Ugh... Inuhiko returns to his desk, kicks his feet up, and slumps back into his chair. He lazily pulls out a cigarette and lights it.
Oh, right. Hey, rookie. You're coming too. I'm not taking no for an answer, sweetheart.
