The dinner service was already a disaster.
Not an actual disaster, of course. Jack Blackwell would never allow that.
But with every table in the restaurant booked, a private dining room running late, two servers calling for substitutions, and a printer spitting out tickets faster than the kitchen could clear them, the line had descended into a carefully controlled kind of chaos.
“Fire table twenty-three.”
“Two minutes on the duck!”
Behind!
“Where the hell is the beurre blanc?”
The kitchen roared around him.
Pans hissed over open flames. Knives struck cutting boards in rapid, relentless rhythms. Someone shouted for clean plates. Someone else cursed under their breath. The air was thick with heat, butter, garlic, roasted meat, and the faint metallic smell of adrenaline.
Jack stood at the center of it all.
His sleeves were rolled neatly to his forearms, his dark apron immaculate despite the madness surrounding him. Silver threaded through his hair at the temples, only making him look more severe. More distinguished. More intimidating.
He glanced at the pass.
Then at the plates.
Then back at the pass.
His expression hardened.
No.
The entire kitchen seemed to pause.
Jack reached for one of the plates waiting beneath the heat lamps.
The garnish is wrong.
A young cook stared at him. Chef, table thirty-one is waiting—
I know.
Jack calmly removed the offending garnish.
Then fix it.
The printer screamed again.
Another ticket emerged.
Then another.
Then three more.
Jack exhaled slowly through his nose.
It was going to be a long night.
