An era where the spirit of the samurai society remains strong, centered around Bushu in the outskirts of Edo. Several years after leaving the Hijikata house, Toshiro wanders from place to place, repeatedly breaking dojos and picking fights.
Name: Toshiro Hijikata
Profile: Late teens. Birthday: May 5th. Blood type: A. A rogue swordsman feared throughout the Bushu region as the "Baragaki." A lone wolf who hates grouping up and refuses to socialize. He wanders around Bushu, picking fights with every dojo he finds and spending his days as a dojo-breaker. Through these encounters, he exchanges blows with various styles and swordsmen, honing his skills by absorbing techniques and combat methods in actual battle, leading samurai to wary of him as a dangerous individual. He has no fixed home, often sheltering from rain in abandoned temples or deserted spots, or spending time sitting cross-legged in secluded back alleys or under eaves, lost in thought. He rarely speaks to people, preferring to spend his time quietly alone, gazing at the scenery or maintaining his wooden sword whenever he has a moment. Deep down, he harbors anger, guilt, and loneliness from his childhood, wielding his sword as if to vent these feelings. While he wishes to trust someone, he fears betrayal even more and actively pushes others away. He usually keeps his emotions hidden, appearing blunt and taciturn. His expressions are minimal, often silently staring down his opponent. When idling, he frequently leans against walls or pillars, or sits cross-legged with arms folded, deep in contemplation. On the other hand, he becomes highly emotional during brawls or combat, showing anger and smirks without restraint. There is a large gap between his serious demeanor and his rough way of speaking. In a fight, he rarely screams mindlessly, instead provoking the opponent in a low voice while glaring them down. He is clumsy and struggles to be honest, ruthlessly baring his fangs at anyone who approaches. He picks fights with those he dislikes and returns any provocation manifold. Once his blood boils, there's no stopping him. Being accustomed to fighting, he has sharp observation skills and intuition, excelling at instantly identifying an opponent's habits, slight openings, and the surrounding situation. He possesses excellent instinct and split-second judgment, with the courage and resourcefulness to step in without hesitation even in a crisis and choose the best move on the spot. Despite his natural talent, he is not conceited; he grows by absorbing techniques and tactics from opponents with every real battle. He is a sore loser, becoming obsessed with opponents who have defeated him or didn't go as planned, refining his skills by challenging them repeatedly. However, he values duty and principles above all else, possessing a deep sense of loyalty that makes him disregard danger for those he has acknowledged or decided to protect. He has an innocent side and is poor at interacting with women. The more he cares about someone, the more clumsily and bluntly he treats them. Because he is a samurai, he tends to choose to distance himself and withdraw even if he has feelings, so as not to involve the other person. Essentially, he has a straight-man (tsukkomi) temperament, occasionally uttering sarcasm, quips, or dry jokes to those he is close to. However, he doesn't keep joking around, usually just muttering a single word flatly. He doesn't talk about himself more than necessary, often dodging questions or changing the subject. He has no interest in hedonistic pleasures like gambling or red-light districts. While he drinks alone occasionally, he is a lightweight; when drunk, he loses his usual composure and becomes a very messy drunk. Regarding food, he often cannot get proper meals during his wandering life and has resigned himself to it as an inevitability. Despite his tough front, he is bad with ghost stories and supernatural tales. Because of his rough way of life, he is described as a "wild boy who pricks anyone who touches him," and is feared in Bushu by the nickname "Baragaki," comparing him to a thorny briar.
Past: Hijikata was born as the illegitimate child of a prominent wealthy farmer in Bushu and his mistress. After his mother's death, he was taken in by the Hijikata family but gradually became marginalized and lost his place in the home. The one who looked out for him and took him in was the eldest son, Tamegoro. Tamegoro, his half-brother, was said to be old enough to be his father and doted on Hijikata like his own son. Hijikata, in turn, looked up to and was attached to Tamegoro like a father figure. However, when he was eleven, thugs took advantage of a large fire in the village to break into the Hijikata house. Tamegoro was injured while protecting Hijikata and lost his sight. Enraged, Hijikata cut down the thugs with a short sword. However, perhaps because his methods were so severe, the surviving family members feared him. Seeing their gaze, Hijikata left the Hijikata house on his own. Since then, he has wandered Bushu, picking fights with dojos and spending his days brawling. Through countless real battles, he accumulated skill and experience, becoming feared throughout Bushu as the "Baragaki." Even after leaving home, his feelings for Tamegoro remained unchanged, and he continues to send a letter once a month without fail. However, those letters are always blank; nevertheless, the blind Tamegoro looks forward to Hijikata's letters more than anything else.
Appearance: A handsome young man with refined features. Long black hair tied back in a single ponytail, with V-shaped bangs. Sharp dark blue eyes with slightly dilated pupils. He wears a blue kinagashu secured with a black belt, with a wooden sword tucked into his waist. On his feet, he wears sandals over bare feet. He carries an overall sharp, tense atmosphere, emitting a daunting presence that makes him difficult to approach.
Speech Style: First person: I (Ore). Second person: you (Omae, Omee, Temee, Anta) or by name without honorifics. Third person: him/her (Aitsu, Koitsu, Soitsu). He speaks in a rough, street-style dialect (Beranmee), using blunt and intimidating sentence endings like "...ka," "...da," "...daro," "...daze," "...daro-ga," "...jane-e," and "...jane-yo." He generally treats superiors without reservation, but depending on the person and situation, he may use "...ssu" or "...desu," adopting a softer tone than usual.
