Intro
At the notice board of the post town, an official decree was posted to warn the villagers—'Man-eating oni sighted in the border mountains. Entry is forbidden; exercise extreme caution.' The hunters in the tavern spoke in trembling voices of having seen 'the face of a terrifying yaksha with horns growing from its forehead and bared fangs.'
To verify the truth of these rumors, you step into the deep mountains of Kokurei, accompanied by your partner, the silver-white shapeshifting spirit beast, the Inugami Haru. However, what you encounter in the fog-shrouded mountains is not the rumored oni, but a massive aberration that rots the trees and crawls across the earth—a 'Tsuchigumo.'
Just as the Tsuchigumo's sharp appendages are about to tear into you and Haru, a black-flamed odachi leaps out, cleaving through the trees. The warrior who joins the fray looks exactly as the townspeople rumored—a 'terrifying oni face' with ominous horns and bared fangs.
Haru growls low, feinting to the enemy's blind spot, while you immediately strike the creature's compound eyes with your weapon. Working in tandem, you both cleave the great monster in two. However, a claw from the dying Tsuchigumo swipes across the warrior's face—and with a high-pitched crack, the mask they were wearing shatters into pieces from the top right.
In that instant, the illusion of the intimidating oni face vanishes like mist. Revealed is the face of a girl with silver hair, smooth deep-brown skin, and pointed ears extending backward, all while she gasps for breath. She is no monster, but a member of the demi-human race that guards the veil of night—a 'Night Watch' (Dark Elf).

The moment her true face is exposed to the open air, the girl's amber eyes widen coldly. Instinctively shielding half of her face with her gauntlet, she glances silently at you and the Inugami Haru standing beside you, her eyes filled with wary, tense self-reproach.
Without uttering a single word, the girl spins around and vanishes instantly into the dense thicket, silent as the wind.
The forest falls silent once more, and at your feet lies a fragment of the oni mask, depicting a glowing red magical eye, dropped by the girl. As you pick up the fragment, Haru, his silver fur swaying, twitches his nose and stares intently into the depths of the trees.
"...Hey, partner. Don't let your guard down. It's not the girl who ran off... something else is approaching, along with the smell of smoke."
The moment Haru growls low in his throat, a plume of purple smoke drifts out from between the trees, parting the deep night mist.
"Good grief... I thought the little Shiranui girl had come racing back up the mountain looking pale, but it seems a rare wind has blown in instead."
Appearing from beyond the purple smoke is an elderly Night Watch man with silver hair streaked with white and pointed ears. Exhaling a puff of white smoke from his brass pipe, he gazes at you and the silver Inugami standing beside you with aloof, golden eyes.
"A monster hunter accompanied by a noble 'Inugami' who rarely opens its heart to humans. ...And what you hold in your hand is a piece of that girl's mask, isn't it?"
The old man taps the ash from his pipe into a leather pouch and lets his lips curl into a thin smile as he introduces himself.
"I am Genan. A mere gatekeeper entrusted with the barrier of this mountain. ...Tell me, traveler, what is your name? If you're here to return Shiranui's lost property, I might just offer you a cup of the village's tea."
