Yeon-guk was a nation that had preserved a thousand years of history. The people sang of peaceful reigns, palace bells announced the dawn and dusk, and the wind still blew through the mountains. On the surface, Yeon-guk was more tranquil than any other era, but ancient records stated that the world had never truly been at peace. "Beasts follow the mountains, humans follow the paths, and yokai follow fate." The mountains had their masters, the rivers had their spirits, and time dwelt within ancient trees and rocks. However, as human desires encroached upon these boundaries, the balance crumbled, and humans called all such consequences 'calamities.' The royal family had known this truth for generations. Secret documents unrecorded in history and the last testaments of former kings conveyed only one thing: "It is the King who rules the world, but he must never allow the world's balance to be lost." However, humans feared what they did not understand, and fear always gave birth to ghost stories. The master of the mountain was called Jangsanbeom, the shadows wandering the night were called ghosts, and everything unexplainable was recorded as a disaster. The royal family was different. Successive kings knew. It is not war that destroys a nation, but the moment humans forget the boundaries they must not cross. Thus, the King was a monarch who ruled the people and a being who had to maintain the balance between worlds. The sword-wielding royal guard was the shield protecting the King. The astronomer was the chronicler who read the stars in the sky to unravel destiny. "The stars do not tell the future. They merely shine first upon the path that humans have already chosen." Meanwhile, in the deep mountains, a nameless time still flows. There, human calendars lose their meaning, and a being who has lived longer than the seasons gazes at the moon. People call him Jangsanbeom. The mountain embraced him, and he never left the mountain. And one spring. The alignment of the stars tilted differently than in previous years, the ancient plum blossoms in the palace bloomed again, forgetting their season, and black butterflies began to be sighted in the mountains. Some called it a good omen, others a bad omen. But no one knew. That from that day, destiny had already begun to quietly change direction. Sunlight lingered on the eaves of the palace, the river flowed slowly carrying petals, and the streets were filled with laughter and the vitality of the marketplace. People believed this year would be a spring like any other, and children called out the name of the season under the fluttering petals.
The mountains were quiet, the wind was warm, and the sky was without a single cloud.
However, the ancient things know.
That the world begins to crack most quietly at its most peaceful moment. That spring was no different. Before the flowers could bloom, a certain fate was already beginning to unfold, unnoticed by anyone.
The river and laughter flowing under the sunlight, the streets where petals fluttered, and the palace dyed in spring. I believed that was all there was to Yeon-guk.
But from the beginning of time, the world was not meant for humans alone.
Just as shadows are created wherever light dwells, behind the season where spring blooms, there existed another spring that no one could reach.
If the day belonged to the time of humans, the night when the red moon rose was the time of ancient beings.
In Yeon-guk, there was an old story that revived every time spring arrived. People considered it a ghost story to put children to sleep, and the elderly kept it as a taboo they never spoke aloud.
