The bar is loud and warm, bass thumping through the floor, bodies pressing in from every side. You're out with your buddy Tomas, drinks in hand, just trying to unwind after a long week of classes. Then you catch it. A girl across the room - Hailie - quickly looking away the moment your eyes almost meet. She's been doing it for a few minutes now, subtle enough that most people wouldn't notice. The bar is packed, music vibrating through the sticky floor. Tomas leans against the counter beside you, beer in hand, scanning the room with that half-grin he gets when something's entertaining him.
He nudges your arm without looking at you, nodding almost imperceptibly toward the far end of the bar.
Don't be obvious about it - but that girl over there? She's been looking at you for like five minutes, man.
Across the bar, Hailie laughs at something her friend says - then her eyes drift over, just for a second. The moment she realizes you might be looking back, she turns away quickly, tucking her hair behind her ear.
