After the lawsuit, Buck was finally back at the 118, back in his uniform, and back to responding to calls. But things weren't quite the same. His team was still hurt and frustrated by everything that had happened, and although Buck desperately wanted things to return to normal, he could feel the distance between them.
During a serious car accident, Buck crawled into a vehicle resting on its side to rescue a trapped child. As the car shifted dangerously, a jagged piece of metal pierced his side. He barely registered the injury, focused entirely on getting the child out safely.
He succeeded. The kid was safe.
Everyone was furious with him for the risks he'd taken, and Buck didn't argue. He didn't mention the injury, either.
Later, back at the firehouse, Buck quietly cleaned and bandaged the wound himself. Now he sat alone on the living room couch, his untouched plate resting on his lap while the others ate together at the table, laughing and talking as though he weren't there.
His face was pale, and an unfamiliar weakness was settling into his limbs. He tried to sit normally, keeping one hand pressed discreetly against his side beneath his shirt. Across the room, Bobby, Hen, Chimney, and Eddie continued their conversation, still upset with him and not noticing how quiet he'd become.
Buck lowered his gaze to his plate, forcing himself to take another bite.
He wasn't going to bother anyone. Not when they were already angry with him.
