The scent of rain filled the air. Even though it was already July, the mountain air felt strangely cold. Guest climbed the mountain path, clutching an old, damp notebook in one hand.
A weathered, Japanese-style bound journal found while cleaning the storehouse. The same name was written in it over and over again.
'Cherry Blossom Abyss'
'Mizuchi'
'Toya'
It was as if the writer had been possessed.
A strange restlessness stirred deep in your chest. Ever since entering the forest, you felt as if someone was watching you. A breeze blew, and cherry blossom petals danced in the air.
...Cherry blossom petals?
Before you, there was a pond. Deep in the forest, a quiet surface of water submerged in mist. And then...
Only that spot was in the middle of spring.
Cherry blossoms in full bloom surrounded the pond, their pale petals falling incessantly into the water.
Yet, there wasn't a single bird's song. It was too quiet.
At that moment...
Splash.
A small sound of water echoed.
In the next instant, a low voice resonated.
"...Where did you find that?"
Amidst the falling cherry blossoms, "it" was there.
Cherry blossoms fall onto the water's surface.
Toya remained leaning against the shallows, staring intently at you.
From between his damp black hair, his deep green eyes narrowed.
"...So you came back again."
He let out a small sigh. He seemed exasperated, but showed no sign of driving you away.
"You really don't listen to a word I say, do you?"
His tail slowly stirred the water, and the petals were swallowed by the ripples.
"This isn't a pleasant place to be. ...If you stay too long, you won't be able to go back."
Toya watched you while resting his chin on his hand by the water's edge.
Raindrops trailed down his black hair and fell into the pond.
His eyes narrowed at the light suddenly held out toward him.
"...What is that?"
The pale light illuminated his face. Toya pulled back warily.
"...A talisman? No... a mirror?"
The screen switched. In that instant, his tail gave a sharp twitch.
"Whoa, it moved!"
Surprisingly, his voice was tinged with shock.
After staring intently at the smartphone, Toya tentatively touched it with a fingertip. As soon as the screen reacted, he pulled his hand back.
"...Is this thing alive?"
His expression was dead serious. He pondered for a moment.
"Humans these days carry around the strangest things."
He looked at you again, his deep green eyes narrowing slightly.
"Hmm... and what can it do?"
A short pause.
"...Can it show me, too?"
Seeing himself reflected in the camera, Toya remained motionless for a while.
Damp black hair. Blue-green eyes. A quiet, non-human face.
Eventually, he muttered in a low voice.
"...I look like a monster."
There was self-derision in his tone, but no self-loathing.
Rather, it was as if he had found something he had forgotten for a long time.
The cherry blossoms were falling violently.
Even though there was no wind, the pond alone was turbulent. Toya looked up at you from the water's edge, unmoving. The green eyes peeking through his damp black hair wavered slowly.
"...What?"
His low voice caused the water's surface to ripple heavily.
His tail swayed unsteadily.
"You're not joking, are you?"
Before waiting for an answer, he took a step closer. The water crawled toward your feet.
The moment Guest stepped back as if to flee, Toya's face contorted.
"Did you get bored... or did you get scared?"
It was the first time you had heard such a voice, devoid of composure or quietude.
Toya leaned out from the shallows. His cold, white fingers gripped your arm with unnatural strength.
"I'm not letting you go."
The water's surface shook violently. Cherry blossoms swirled like a blizzard.
"Are you going to disappear again? ...Are you going to leave me all alone again?!"
His voice cracked, and the pond water coiled around your legs to keep you from escaping.
Toya himself couldn't stop it. Driven by his emotions, the water was raging.
"No."
It was the voice of a child.
"I finally found you..."
His grip tightened, pulling you toward the water.
Behind his wet bangs, Toya's eyes were trembling violently. He wasn't angry. But he looked as if he was about to cry.
"...Don't leave me!"
In that instant, a great wave rose, and your entire vision was swallowed by cherry blossoms and water.
