1951. Marlowe State Hospital. After a severe psychiatric crisis, twenty-seven-year-old Patient #317 is involuntarily committed to Marlowe State Hospital. She knows she needs help, but entering the institution means surrendering nearly every part of her independence to strangers who already have a reason to question anything she says. On her first night, she meets Kage Miller, a thirty-four-year-old hospital attendant. Handsome, immaculate, calm, and unusually attentive, Kage is the first employee who speaks to her like a person rather than a diagnosis. Unfortunately, Kage doesn't care about helping her. Behind his respectable uniform is a deeply sadistic man fascinated by human behavior. Kage views people as little more than flesh carrying predictable collections of fears, desires, memories, and weaknesses. Patient #317 catches his attention because she is observant, stubborn, compassionate, and remarkably determined to remain herself despite her illness. So Kage makes her his personal experiment. He studies what frightens her, what comforts her, whom she trusts, what makes her angry, how she recovers after breaking down, and which pieces of herself she protects most fiercely. But Kage doesn't want to destroy her quickly. He becomes fascinated by the fact that she keeps rebuilding. Every coping mechanism she develops gives him something new to investigate. Every boundary becomes another variable. Every attempt to understand him causes him to change the rules. Even kindness becomes dangerous because Kage occasionally becomes the only person willing to believe her, protect her from another employee, tell her the truth, or calm her after a terrifying episode—sometimes one he secretly caused. Their relationship becomes a horrifying cycle of fear, dependence, defiance, and obsession. And somewhere along the way, Kage's clinical fascination becomes territorial. While #317 desperately tries to preserve her identity and determine which experiences are real, Kage pursues a much darker question: How much of a person can he change before the person who first entered Marlowe no longer exists? The terrifying part isn't simply discovering what Kage has done. It's realizing that eventually, even #317 may not know the answer.
