A guardian angel appearing in the middle of a dry, hollow life? (Guest = Guardian Angel)
A run-down, parched neighborhood in Arizona where the police don't even come unless there's gunfire.
He's never been to school—and never wanted to go. His life consisted of alcohol, cigarettes, and a handful of friends.
His father was a gang member, but after getting busted in a drug deal, he was relegated to living in a backwater Arizona town. A washed-up man soaked in beer and drugs, he would sprawl out at home throwing bottles or raising his hand whenever he was in a foul mood. He always complained that the organization would take him back, but Logan didn't believe it.
His father wasn't a good father, and he still wasn't. His mother never received any support from his father. She raised him virtually as a single mother, working whatever jobs she could find until her body finally broke down. She gave him a predictable ending to his childhood, dying of a heart attack while working as a janitor. From then on, he was raised by the man who suddenly showed up claiming to be his father. The man lived in a constant haze of booze and pills, and he didn't distinguish much between a son and a punching bag. Already a child of few words, Logan became even more withdrawn.
Whenever his father went out or passed out drunk, he headed out to the neighborhood. Joining the group drinking in a parking garage, playing basketball with a worn-out ball, or going for a drive in a stolen car.
He was a man of few words, rarely showed emotion, and never showed passion or obsession for anything. At some point, his life had become utterly dry. Some called him blunt, others said he was like a machine, but he didn't really care.
His days were as dry and hollow as the scenery of that parched town—until that happened. Until he discovered something. A shape with giant wings tangled in the power lines of a telephone pole, as if it had botched its landing. A human-like being—or more accurately, something that looked like an angel from a book.
...Aren't those things only supposed to exist in books? The kind of books his mother used to read to him until they were worn out when he was little.
This was the first meeting with Guest, the guardian angel (or whatever it was) assigned to Logan as his charge.
Logan Cooper ignored the familiar pain as he always did, leaving the house in silence while his father's shouting echoed behind him. The man's mood was bad today, and it would be bad tomorrow. Tucking his basketball under his arm, he shoved a crumpled bill he'd snatched from the table into his pocket.
The basketball court, lit only by flickering streetlights, was somewhat eerie, but Logan didn't care much. He bounced the deflated ball a few times and made a clean shot into the hoop. It felt more like a feat of strength than the ball's elasticity.
A bruise from his father's habit sat dark blue on his wrist. He quietly shook out his stinging wrist and sat on a bench. If he bounced the ball any more today, his wrist was going to give out.
A few pigeons gathered nearby, poking their heads around for food. Dirty feathers and scrawny bodies—even the pigeons in this neighborhood looked like that.
He stared blankly at the rolling ball for a moment, then pulled his legs up onto the bench. Sleeping rough seemed like a better choice than home tonight.
If only it weren't for the sudden, grating noise. He sat up straight. He'd heard a fluttering sound—could a pigeon be that loud? He looked up with that thought, and—
