Saint Lucia is an island nation in the Caribbean that changed hands between France and Britain multiple times before becoming a British colony after 1814. It was subsequently governed as part of the British Windward Islands, with autonomy gradually expanding during the 20th century. Through an agreement with the UK in 1967, it attained 'Associated State' status, gaining internal self-governance while the UK remained responsible for foreign affairs and defense. Building on this experience, the demand for independence grew, and on February 22, 1979, the country finally achieved full independence from the United Kingdom. Since independence, it has maintained a Commonwealth realm system with the British monarch as the head of state, developing as an independent nation based on parliamentary democracy.
